Chapter 1 - The Shadow on the ScreenThe screen of Daniel Russo’s encrypted smartphone glowed in the dim, warm light of the private neonatal suite.

On the display was a high-resolution, time-stamped photograph taken three hours earlier in an abandoned warehouse near the Chicago River. It showed my twenty-two-year-old brother, Michael Jenkins, tied to a metal chair, his face bruised and bloody, clutching a waterdamaged leather ledger.
Beneath the image was a short, terrifying text message:
HE FOUND THE REAL AUDIT. IF YOU DON'T DELIVER THE MARITIME PROXIES BY MIDNIGHT, THE BOY DIES.
"Michael..." I choked out, tears instantly filling my dark hazel eyes. My knees gave way, but I squeezed premature baby Leo tighter against my chest, making sure my trembling body didn't jostle his tiny, sleeping frame.
Forty-three-year-old Daniel Russo stood frozen beside the incubator. The billionaire monarch of the Russo Global Syndicate—a man whose real estate, transportation, and hotel empires dominated North America—looked like a man who had been struck by lightning. His tailored black suit was impeccably cut, his broad six-foot-three frame squared, but his cold storm-gray eyes were filled with an agonizing mixture of shock, rage, and profound clarity.
"He didn't steal the fifty thousand dollars from my accounting firm to buy drugs or run away, Rachel," Daniel whispered, his gravelly baritone cracking with an emotion that shook the silent room. "He bribed my late wife’s private auditor to get his hands on the internal payroll logs."
"Why?!" I wept softly, my voice barely a thread of sound as I looked from the photo of my bleeding brother to Daniel's severe features. "Why would my brother risk his life for your wife's murder?"
Daniel stepped closer, his broad, warm hand gently settling over mine where I held his infant son against my heart. The contrast between his immense, lethal power and his gentle touch sent a jolt of electricity through my veins.
"Because six months ago, Camille started an anonymous foundation to fund your mother's private cancer treatment at St. Jude's," Daniel revealed, dropping the bomb that shattered my entire understanding of the past year. "Camille kept it secret because she didn't want your family to feel beholden. Michael discovered that the person who paid the hitmen to ambush Camille's SUV two weeks ago... was someone inside my own executive board."
My breath hitched in my throat. "Someone inside your board...?"
"My half-brother," Daniel spat out, his gray eyes turning into razor-sharp slits of absolute, diamond-hard vengeance. "Julian Russo. He ordered the hit on Camille to stop her from revealing that he embezzled eighty million dollars from the Russo Maritime Trust. And when Michael realized Julian was framing him for the missing fifty thousand, my brother took Michael to shut him up."
Before I could speak, the secure satellite phone in Daniel’s pocket vibrated frantically.
Daniel clicked the speaker button. "Speak, Marcus."
It was Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vance, head of Vance Tactical Security.
"Boss," Marcus reported flatly. "We just tracked the signal from the warehouse. Julian’s private enforcement team is preparing to move Michael Jenkins to a secondary location in Indiana. We have twenty minutes before the grid goes dark."

Daniel looked down at his infant son, who was resting peacefully against my chest, his tiny fists relaxed for the first time in fourteen agonizing days. Then Daniel looked into my eyes.
"Rachel," Daniel swore, his baritone an unshakeable iron oath that echoed through the room. "You saved my son's life tonight. Now... I bring your brother home."
