Chapter 5 - The Inheritance of LiesElliot stared at the brass key. The metal caught the amber glow of the kitchen light, casting long, distorted shadows across the table.

"What secret?" Elliot demanded. "My grandfather built his fortune in real estate and shipping. Everyone knows the history."

"That’s the fairy tale they printed in the Boston Globe," Naomi said, standing up and walking over to the counter to pour two cups of water. Her hands were steady, but the tension in her shoulders was palpable. "Your grandfather and mine weren't just business acquaintances fifty years ago. They were partners in an enterprise that collapsed in scandal—a massive corporate acquisition involving stolen patents and a manipulated bankruptcy that ruined hundreds of families, including mine."

Elliot stood up, shaking his head. "That's impossible. My family's ledger is clean."

"Because they burned the evidence and framed my grandfather for the whole thing," Naomi shot back, turning to face him, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce fire. "When my grandfather died, he left proof behind—proof that your family’s entire empire was built on stolen ground. When your father found out we were together three years ago, he didn't just see a poor girl dating an heir. He saw the granddaughter of the only man who could legally dismantle the Rhodes Foundation."

The room went dead silent. The hum of the refrigerator sounded like a roaring engine.

Elliot backed up a step, gripping the edge of the kitchen counter. Every memory of his childhood—the cold stone hallways of his family estate, the rigid rules, the constant reminder of what it meant to carry the Rhodes name—suddenly replayed in his mind through a terrifying new lens. He wasn't raised to be a businessman. He was raised to be a warden guarding a vault of stolen sins.

"If the key opens that box in Zurich," Elliot said slowly, the pieces clicking together with sickening clarity, "we have the power to tear my family's legacy down to the studs."

"Yes," Naomi said softly. "And that is why your father’s security team has been watching this house for the last twenty-four hours."
