Chapter 4 - The Ancestral Shadow"I thought I was protecting you by leaving," Elliot whispered, staring down at the table. "I didn't know about the threat."

"Of course you didn't," Naomi sighed, leaning back. "Your family operates like a syndicate wrapped in corporate silk. They didn't just want me gone; they wanted me erased. For the first year after I left, I moved three times. I changed my number, my name on apartment leases, everything. I raised Bella alone in a tiny studio apartment downtown, working graveyard shifts at a bakery just to buy formula."

"Why didn't you go to the police?"

"With what proof?" Naomi gave a bitter, humorless smile. "Your father’s lawyers own half the judges in Massachusetts. The moment I threatened to bring your child into the light, they would have dragged me through a custody battle that would have crushed me into dust. I kept quiet to keep Bella safe."

"Then why are you here now?" Elliot asked, leaning forward, urgency spiking in his veins. "Why were you at Gate C12? Where were you going?"

Naomi hesitated. For the first time, a flicker of genuine fear crossed her features. She reached into her pocket and slid a heavy, cold metallic object across the table.

It was an old, heavy brass key with a jagged, unfamiliar head.

"I wasn't going on vacation, Elliot," she said quietly. "Someone left this on my porch three days ago. It belongs to a safety deposit box at a bank in Zurich. Inside it is the documentation my grandfather left behind—the real reason your family engineered our breakup three years ago. It has nothing to do with money or social status."

"Then what is it?"

"Your family didn't ruin us just because I was ordinary," Naomi whispered. "They ruined us because of who my grandfather really was... and the secret papers he hid before he died."
