Chapter 5 - Inside the Lion’s Den

The Hale Tower rose fifty stories into the steel-gray autumn sky, a monument to corporate greed built out of glass, polished marble, and crushed dreams. Inside the grand auditorium on the forty-fifth floor, hundreds of elite investors, board members, and journalists sat in plush velvet seats, murmuring quietly as classical music played softly over the state-of-the-art sound system.
On the massive LED screen behind the elevated mahogany stage, glowing letters spelled out the words: HALE ENTERPRISES: BUILDING THE FUTURE.
I moved quietly through the side aisles of the auditorium, pushing a stainless-steel service cart laden with crystal flutes and bottles of sparkling cider. Dressed in standard catering attire with a silver tray balanced on my palm, I was completely invisible to the high-rolling attendees—just another anonymous worker meant to blend into the background. Exactly as planned.
From my peripheral vision, I spotted Christopher Hale standing near the wings of the stage. He wore an immaculate bespoke suit, a diamond-encrusted lapel pin, and a predatory, confident smile as he shook hands with the CEO of Global Zenith Corp. He looked untouchable. He looked like a king surveying his domain.
He had no idea that backstage, in the restricted digital control room, Ethan was currently bypassing the building's firewalls with a master override drive.
I checked my watch. 10:58 AM.
The keynote presentation was scheduled to begin in two minutes.
My heart pounded against my ribs like a trapped bird. If Ethan encountered a security lock, if a building guard stumbled upon the server room too early, or if the encryption failed, our entire plan would collapse, and Christopher would crush us both without a second thought.
Suddenly, the auditorium lights dimmed.
The soft classical music faded out.
A booming voice echoed from the overhead speakers. "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the visionary founder and CEO of Hale Enterprises, Christopher Hale!"
Polite, thunderous applause filled the room as Christopher stepped up to the center stage, radiating effortless charm and arrogant authority. He raised his hands in a modest gesture, basking in the adoration of the crowd.
"Thank you, thank you," Christopher’s voice boomed through the microphone, smooth and dripping with false humility. "Today marks a monumental milestone for our company. As we finalize our merger with Global Zenith, we reaffirm our commitment to growth, innovation, and unwavering integrity..."
Integrity. The word tasted like ash in my mouth.
I stood near the back corner of the auditorium, my hands resting lightly on my service cart, watching him spin his web of lies.
Up on the stage, Christopher smiled broadly and turned toward the giant LED screen behind him. "Let’s take a look at our audited financial projections for the upcoming fiscal year..."
He clicked the remote in his hand.
The screen flickered.
Instead of glowing corporate charts and inflated profit margins, the massive display suddenly flashed bright red.
A collective gasp swept through the auditorium.
Spread across the fifty-foot screen in bold, unyielding black-and-white text was a master file labeled: HALE ENTERPRISES: THE TRUE COST OF POWER.
Below it, documents began scrolling automatically—bank transfers to corrupt city officials, blueprints of substandard housing projects hidden behind shell companies, and legal records of fraudulent eviction notices signed directly by Christopher’s hand.
The auditorium erupted into absolute chaos.
Investors leapt to their feet, shouting in outrage. Journalists whipped out their cameras, flashing lights blindingly as they captured the cascading proof of systemic corporate crime.
On stage, Christopher’s smile vanished instantly. His face turned an ash-gray color, his eyes darting frantically across the screen as he realized what had happened. He hammered his remote frantically, but the screen refused to respond, locked tight by an override program that no firewall in the building could penetrate.
"Turn that off!" Christopher roared into the microphone, his composed facade shattering completely. "Cut the power! Someone shut down the system!"
Right then, the side doors of the auditorium swung open.

A team of federal regulatory inspectors and digital crimes officers, led by two armed federal marshals, walked briskly down the center aisle, their badges gleaming under the stage lights.
And walking right beside them, tall, proud, and wearing his signature red hoodie, was Ethan Hale.
