Chapter 3 - The Secret Blueprint

Ethan’s car wasn’t one of the ostentatious, roaring sports cars his father drove. It was a sleek, understated electric sedan parked two blocks away from the Golden Oak—a quiet rebellion against Christopher’s hyper-visible displays of wealth. As we drove through the neon-lit streets of the city, the silence inside the cabin was comfortable, filled only by the low hum of the electric engine and the rhythmic tapping of rain beginning to patter against the windshield.
"Tell me everything," Ethan signed while keeping his eyes on the road, glancing at me every few seconds to catch my hand movements in the dashboard's dim glow. "How much do you need to clear the eviction?"
"Eighteen hundred dollars," I said, feeling a familiar knot tighten in my stomach. "Plus late fees. It's impossible. Even if I find another job tomorrow, no one pays out upfront."
Ethan reached into his backpack resting on the passenger-side floorboard and pulled out a heavy, leather-bound tablet case. He unlocked it with a biometric scan and spun the screen toward me.
"Look at this," he signed.
I leaned in, squinting at the complex financial spreadsheets, corporate registries, and legal documents glowing on the screen. At first glance, it looked like standard corporate data, but as I read through the organizational charts, my breath caught in my throat.
"This is..." I stared at him, bewildered. "This is Hale Enterprises. But... these are internal audits. Whistleblower reports."
"My father didn't build his real estate empire by playing fair," Ethan signed, his jaw tightening with a mixture of anger and sorrow. "He bought politicians, bypassed safety regulations in low-income housing projects, and systematically forced small business owners out of their properties using predatory loans and illegal evictions—the exact same kind of eviction notice sitting in your purse right now."
I looked from the screen up to Ethan’s face. "Why do you have this?"
"Because I’m not just the deaf son he keeps hidden away in a penthouse to avoid public embarrassment," Ethan signed, a fierce, brilliant spark igniting in his eyes. "I’m his lead systems architect and digital security analyst. He thinks I’m helpless because I don't use my voice the way he wants me to, so he never bothered to check what I had access to on the company servers. For the past three years, I’ve been quietly backing up every single illegal transaction, every forced eviction, and every bribe he’s ever authorized."
"Ethan," I whispered, the weight of what he was telling me settling over my shoulders. "If your father finds out you have this—if he knows you're holding onto a weapon that could bring down his entire empire—he will destroy you."
"He already tried," Ethan signed bitterly. "He tried to institutionalize me when I was twenty, claiming my deafness made me 'mentally unstable' and unable to manage my inheritance. The only reason I escaped is because I managed to legally lock my personal assets away in an independent trust before he could freeze them."

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a sleek black card, and pressed it firmly into my hand.
"Use this to pay off your rent tonight," Ethan signed, his gaze steady and unwavering. "Consider it a very small down payment on a much larger project. I need your help, Mary. You have the courage to stand up to him, and I have the inside information to take him down. Together, we are going to dismantle his entire world."
