Chapter 6 - The Ultimate GambitI huddled deep within the thick brush of the park, shivering in the cool autumn air, my phone clutched in my trembling hand. I had escaped the house, but I was completely alone, weaponless, and hunted.

My husband was inside that house, captured by corporate mercenaries working for Marcus Vance.
And yet, as I stared down at the screen of my phone, a cold, calculated clarity settled over my panic. I wasn't just a terrified housewife anymore. I was the holder of the most dangerous digital archive in New England.
I unlocked my phone. I didn't call the local police—I knew too well how deep Meridian’s tentacles reached into local municipal departments. Instead, I dialed a direct encrypted media tip line for the Boston Globe’s chief investigative journalism desk—a contact Dr. Thorne’s file had helpfully provided in a master index folder.
A gruff, sharp voice answered on the third ring. “Investigative desk, Miller speaking.”
“Mr. Miller,” I said, my voice steady, ringing with absolute authority. “My name is Brenda Moretti. I am calling from an undisclosed location in West Roxbury. I have in my possession Dr. Aris Thorne’s complete research archive, audio confessions, and financial wire ledgers proving Marcus Vance and Meridian Bio-Tech murdered Dr. Thorne and engineered a massive illegal pharmaceutical cover-up.”
Silence stretched on the other end of the line for two agonizing seconds.
“Prove it,” the journalist said, his tone instantly shifting from skeptical to razor-sharp.
“I am uploading a sample batch right now via an encrypted peer-to-peer tunnel,” I said, tapping furiously on a secure data-sharing app I had installed moments before escaping. “It includes bank transfers to local judges, hospital compliance logs, and video evidence. The moment I hang up this phone, if my husband and I are not safely extracted by federal marshals within thirty minutes, an automated script will release the master password to every major news outlet and federal regulatory agency in the country.”

“Where are you?” the journalist demanded. “And where is your husband?”
“He’s being held hostage inside my home at 442 Elmwood Avenue by three armed corporate mercenaries,” I replied, my eyes fixed on the distant rooftop of my house visible through the trees. “And you’re going to bring the U.S. Attorney’s office with you when you come.”
