Chapter 1 - The First Step onto the FloorThe silent ripple that traveled through the Bellmont Grand’s grand ballroom wasn't loud, but it was absolute.

As Giovanni’s broad, warm palm enveloped my cold fingers, the steady hum of ice clinking against crystal glasses withered away. Couples near the velvet drapes paused mid-sentence. My cousin Sandra, who had spent the last two hours bragging about her husband’s hedge fund promotions, dropped her silver fork onto her plate with a sharp CLACK.
I kept my eyes fixed on the back of Giovanni Fierro’s broad shoulders.
He moved with an effortless, fluid grace that felt entirely alien to the polished, nervous socialites around us. Under the bright chandeliers, his tailored charcoal suit looked expensive enough to buy my one-bedroom apartment three times over, but it was his posture that held the room hostage. He didn't look at the crowd. He didn't look at the bride or the groom. He walked as if the floor had been built specifically for his feet.
When we reached the center of the parquet dance floor, the classical string quartet seemed to stumble over their bows before hastily transitioning into a low, sensual waltz.
Giovanni turned, gently drawing me into his space. His left hand settled against the small of my back—not hesitant, not tentative, but firm and absolute. His right hand cupped mine, his long fingers interlacing with mine with a natural, possessive ease.
"Look at me, Jessica," Giovanni commanded softly. His voice was a deep, velvet baritone, carrying a subtle Italian accent that hit my nerves like a warm pulse.
I raised my head, my hazel eyes locking onto his amber gaze. Up close, the faint scar across his chin gave his handsome, severe face an edge that no amount of tailored silk could soften.
"People are staring," I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. "My aunt... she looks like she's about to faint."
"Let them stare," Giovanni murmured, his eyes holding mine as he led me into a smooth, sweeping turn across the floor. "The more they stare, the less they question."
From the edge of my peripheral vision, I saw Tyler.
He was standing near the primary champagne fountain, his jaw slightly slack, his fingers clenching his glass so hard the stem creaked under the pressure. Beside him, Vanessa’s triumphant smile had completely vanished, replaced by a sharp, anxious scowl as she looked from Giovanni’s face to my hand resting on his shoulder.
"Who are you, Giovanni?" I asked quietly, leaning in just close enough so only he could hear. "Because the man sitting at Table Eleven looked at you like you were holding a pulled grenade."
A slow, breathtaking smile touched the corners of Giovanni’s lips—a look of dark, razor-sharp intelligence that made my pulse leap.
"I am the man who is currently keeping your ex-husband from taking another step in your direction," Giovanni replied smoothly, his hand pressing slightly firmer against my back, pulling me half an inch closer. "Is that not enough for tonight?"
May you like
"It's a start," I admitted, my voice breathy despite myself. "But if I'm pretending to be your wife... shouldn't I know what kind of trouble I just signed up for?"
"In my world, Jessica," Giovanni whispered into my hair as the music soared around us, "trouble doesn't touch my wife. It bows to her."
