Chapter 2 - The Blood on the MarbleThe hallway outside exploded into chaotic, terrifying violence.

Heavy automatic gunfire shattered the quiet night air, followed by the muffled thuds of falling bodies and the desperate shrieks of rival enforcers who had mistakenly believed Lorenzo Rossi’s estate was unguarded.
Inside the nursery, I crouched behind the heavy oak desk, my arms wrapped securely around baby Leo. The two-month-old infant didn't cry. Rested against my skin, full of warm milk for the first time in weeks, he slept through the roar of steel like an angel wrapped in silk.
After three minutes of thunderous gunfire, the heavy brass deadbolt on the nursery door was blown out with a sharp BANG!
The mahogany door swung open.
Standing in the corridor, flanked by four armed operators wearing dark tactical suits, was Lorenzo’s chief lieutenant, Leo. Standing on his knees in the center of the hallway, his hands bound tightly behind his back with plastic zip-ties, his face bruised and bloody, was Mark.
Mark looked up, his wild, bloodshot eyes locking onto me as I stepped out from behind the desk, holding baby Leo against my chest.
"Clara!" Mark shrieked, his voice cracking in pathetic, groveling terror. "Tell him! Tell him I didn't mean it! I came here to save you! The loan sharks forced me to give them the codes!"
Lorenzo Rossi stepped through the shattered doorway, his dark wool coat draping over his broad shoulders like a monarch's cloak. He didn't look at Mark. He walked straight to the sleeping night nurse slumped in the velvet armchair, picking up the half-empty wineglass resting beside her on the side table.
He raised the glass to his nose, sniffing the dark amber liquid.
"Sodium bromide," Lorenzo stated cleanly, his baritone cold as Arctic ice. "A slow-acting chemical taste inhibitor mixed with mild sedatives. Designed to make a nursing infant reject liquid while keeping the caretaker unconscious during the night shifts."
He turned his storm-dark eyes slowly onto the sleeping nurse, then onto Mark kneeling in the hall.
"My wife died during childbirth two months ago," Lorenzo spoke softly, every word dropped into the quiet corridor like a slab of cold granite. "My son was the only piece of her left on this earth. For three weeks, I watched him starve, believing his body was rejecting life. And you... helped Marcus Dominic's syndicate poison his milk so you could clear your gambling debts."
"NO! IT WASN'T ME! IT WAS THE NURSE!" Mark wept, thrashing against his restraints flat on the marble floor. "CLARA! PLEASE! TELL HIM TO LET ME GO!"
I walked out into the corridor, my worn maid's shoes stepping over the spent shell casings littering the floorboards. I stood beside Lorenzo, holding baby Leo close against my heart, looking down at the man who had shoved me down the stairs three weeks ago, the man who had taken my daughter's life.
I felt zero fear. I felt zero hesitation.
"He pushed me down the stairs, Mr. Rossi," I said, my voice crisp, clear, and absolute. "He killed my daughter, Lily."

Lorenzo looked at me, taking in the pale, beautiful resolve in my hazel eyes. He reached into his coat, pulled out a second silver sidearm, and placed the heavy grip flat into my right hand.
"He took your daughter, Clara," Lorenzo whispered into my ear, his broad hand covering mine over the cold steel. "He will never touch another child again."
