Chapter 1 - The Click Beyond the MahoganyThe sharp, heavy CLICK of the brass deadbolt outside the nursery door echoed through the high-ceilinged room like a gunshot.

My heart hammered violently against my ribs, every nerve in my body screaming in terror. In my arms, two-month-old Leo stirred, his tiny, pale fingers clutching weakly at my bare skin, his chest rising and falling in a steady, gentle rhythm beneath my uniform.
Lorenzo Rossi didn't flinch.
The six-foot-four mafia patriarch stood frozen near the crib, his dark charcoal suit immaculate, his eyes—cold, storm-gray, and deadly—shifting from the locked mahogany door to the sleeping nurse slumped in the velvet armchair, and finally back to me.
The heavy, silenced pistol in his right hand slowly lowered, but his posture remained that of an apex predator trapped in a cage.
"Clara..." a muffled, raspy voice whispered through the thick wood from the hallway outside.
It was a voice I recognized instantly—a voice that had haunted my nightmares for three weeks.
Mark.
My abusive ex-boyfriend. The man who had shoved me down a flight of wooden stairs at thirty-eight weeks pregnant, killing my baby daughter, Lily. The man who had borrowed two hundred thousand dollars from rival syndicate loan sharks before vanishing into the night.
"Clara, I know you're in there with the boss's brat," Mark sneered quietly through the heavy door. "I sold the Rossi nursery security codes to Don Dominic's men twenty minutes ago. They're coming up the grand staircase right now. You're going to open this door and give me the kid, or we burn this mansion with you inside."
A cold, nauseating wave of panic washed over me. I pulled my uniform fabric over my chest, holding Leo tightly against my heart, stepping back toward the shadow of the marble fireplace.
Lorenzo Rossi didn't shout. He didn't lose his composure.
He stepped smoothly across the plush carpet, stopping two inches from me. His tall frame completely engulfed my vision, casting a broad, protective shadow over both me and his sleeping son. Up close, I could smell the faint scent of rain, expensive cedarwood cologne, and the sharp metallic edge of gun oil.
"Hold my son tight against your chest, Clara," Lorenzo commanded softly. His baritone voice was smooth, low, and carried a quiet, sovereign authority that instantly cut through the wild terror raging inside my head.
"Mr. Rossi... they have weapons," I whispered, my voice trembling violently as tears of sheer exhaustion welling in my eyes.
Lorenzo reached out his left hand. His broad, calloused fingers gently, reverently touched the small, pale cheek of his nursing baby, feeling the steady warmth of Leo's breathing against my skin.
A subtle, breathtaking shift occurred in his severe, carved features—the terrifying Don of Chicago vanished, replaced by a father who had just witnessed the miraculous resurrection of his dying child.
"They have weapons, Clara," Lorenzo murmured, his storm-gray eyes locking onto mine with an unshakeable, terrifying intensity. "But they don't have a mother fighting for her son."

He pulled a tactical radio from his belt, clicking the side button once.
"Leo," Lorenzo ordered deadpan into the comms. "Execute Protocol Omega in the east wing. Eliminate everyone on the second floor... except the man named Mark. Bring him to me alive."
