Chapter 5 - The Arrival of Marcus VanceOn a warm, clear Saturday afternoon in early September 2026, the sweeping oceanfront gardens of my Evanston estate were bathed in the brilliant golden glow of late summer.

Nine-year-old Grace ran across the manicured green lawn, giggling happily as she flew a giant dragon kite with Marcus Vance—the chief federal investigator who had helped us dismantle Derek's empire.
Marcus wore a simple dark linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up, his broad shoulders relaxed, his storm-gray eyes shining with a warm, genuine affection as he ran beside Grace under the sun.
Over the past six months, Marcus had become a constant, quiet pillar of strength in our lives—attending Grace’s piano recitals, helping her with science projects, and standing by my side with an unreserved, fierce devotion.
I walked out onto the stone terrace wearing a breathtaking floor-length ivory silk dress that caught the soft breeze, holding two glasses of sunlit cider.
Marcus walked up the stone steps, taking a glass from my hand, his gaze meeting mine with deep, unshakeable reverence.
"She has your smile, Claire," Marcus murmured softly, looking at Grace as she adjusted her kite string.
"She has her own strength, Marcus," I answered softly, clinking my glass gently against his under the sun. "She saved both of us."

Marcus stepped closer, wrapping his broad, warm arm around my waist, pulling me gently against his solid frame, leaning down to press a sweet, lingering kiss against my temple.
"You saved yourself, my queen," Marcus promised, his deep baritone thick with emotion. "And I will spend the rest of my life protecting your peace."
