Chapter 7 - The Empire We BuiltTwo years later.

The grand ballroom of the Manhattan hotel glittered beneath a sea of crystal chandeliers, hosting the annual charity gala for the New York Arts Foundation.
I stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, looking down at the gathered crowd of politicians, philanthropists, and corporate titans.
I wore a floor-length gown of deep, liquid crimson silk.

Marco Santini was a fading memory in a foreign prison; the Vanguard faction had been permanently dissolved; and the underground empire was quiet, bound by treaties that guaranteed absolute peace.
Adrian slipped his hand into mine, his fingers interlacing with warmth and unshakeable strength.
“Red again?” he murmured quietly, a teasing glint in his dark eyes as we reached the ballroom floor.
I smiled, looking up at the man who had burned down half the world just to keep me safe.

“Some warnings,” I whispered back, “are simply meant to be tested.”
He pulled me closer against his side, his arm wrapping securely around my waist as the orchestra began to play. We stepped onto the polished dance floor, surrounded by a world that no longer terrified me, because I knew that whatever darkness waited outside, I was standing right beside the man who owned the night.
