Chapter 5 - The Siege at the LakehouseThe storm broke by morning, leaving the estate buried under three feet of pristine, blinding white snow.

The air was crisp and biting. I sat at the mahogany desk in my room, staring blankly out the window at the frozen lake, when the sharp, rhythmic shriek of an emergency alarm pierced the silence of the mansion.

It wasn't the fire alarm. It was the perimeter defense klaxon.

Within three seconds, the heavy oak door of my room swung open. Adrian stood there, wearing a tactical vest over his black shirt, a suppressed automatic rifle slung securely across his chest. His face was carved from granite.

“Get away from the windows,” Adrian commanded, his voice dead calm and absolute.

“What’s happening?” I gasped, standing up from the desk.

“Vanguard faction,” Adrian said, pulling a secondary sidearm from his holster and checking the magazine. “Marco’s remaining loyalists teamed up with an outer-borough crew. They brought snowmobiles across the ice. They want a war.”

Before I could process the words, the distinct crack-crack-crack of suppressed gunfire echoed from the lower courtyard. Glass shattered somewhere on the ground floor.

Elena sprinted down the hallway, shouting tactical updates into a shoulder radio. “Boss! They’ve breached the western gatehouse! Four hostiles, heavily armed!”

“Hold the second-floor stairwell,” Adrian ordered, before turning his gaze back to me. He grabbed my arm, pulling me firmly toward the back corner of the bedroom.

“Adrian, no—you can’t just leave me here—”

“I’m not leaving you,” he interrupted, sliding open a heavy wood-paneled wall section to reveal a reinforced concrete panic room identical to the one in his New York office. “Get inside. Lock the outer seal from the control pad on the right. Do not open it for anyone—not even if you hear my voice—unless I give you the specific passcode we agreed on.”

“What passcode? We never agreed on one!” panic clawed at my throat.

“Red silk,” Adrian said fiercely, his dark eyes burning into mine. “If you don’t hear those two words spoken in that exact sequence, you stay inside until my security team unlocks it manually. Do you understand?”

He didn't wait for my answer. He shoved me gently into the secure vault, hit the exterior seal button, and vanished back into the smoke-filled corridor.

The heavy steel door slid shut with a terrifying, hermetic seal.

Inside the vault, emergency lighting cast a pale green glow over the concrete walls. Through the small, bulletproof observation monitor, I could see the master bedroom clearly.

Gunfire erupted outside the door.

Shouts, heavy boots stamping across the hardwood floor, and the unmistakable sound of breaking furniture filled the air. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I pressed my hands against the glass, praying, begging the silent monitors to show Adrian walking back through that door.

A shadow filled the bedroom.

It wasn't Adrian.

A man in a heavy tactical mask and a black parka stepped into view, holding an assault rifle. He scanned the room, spotted the hidden wall panel, and walked straight toward the panic room door.

He raised the barrel of his rifle, pressing the muzzle directly against the reinforced glass inches from where my face was pressed.

“I know you’re in there, little bird,” a raspy voice sneered through the comms speaker. “Open the door, or we burn the whole mountain down around you.”
