Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost SkyBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor executive penthouse suite at The Moretti Tower on Fifth Avenue was locked down under absolute, non-negotiable security.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security operators in dark charcoal suits guarded every corridor. Inside, I sat in a high-backed velvet armchair, wearing a warm cashmere sweater provided by Vincent’s staff, drinking a cup of hot chamomile tea while private orthopedic specialists verified that my spine and joints were completely unharmed after my aerial drop.
Sitting around the long black granite conference table were Vincent, Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton, and two federal forensic accounting experts.
Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding high-definition digital ledgers and wiretap transcripts flat onto the table toward Vincent and me:
THE SABOTAGE DOSSIER: Confessions and bank registries proving Richard Whitmore transferred $20,000 to the 2020 circus rigger, alongside wiretaps capturing Vanessa Whitmore discussing Grace's planned "accident" at the engagement gala.
THE THIRTY-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Proof that Whitmore Logistics diverted $30 million from the Moretti Maritime Trust over four years to cover illegal gambling debts in Monaco.
THE SOVEREIGN CHARTER: Original federal deeds confirming Grace Mitchell as sole controlling beneficiary of the Vance-Mitchell Circus Trust, worth $140 million, which the Whitmores had illegally suppressed following her crash.
My hands tightened around my teacup until the porcelain creaked. The exhaustion and uncertainty of the past six years vanished, replaced by a clean, weightless, diamond-hard fury.
"They ruined my career," I rasped out, every word falling like an iron block into the silent room. "They let me work three jobs to pay off fake medical debts while they lived off my family's trust."
"They didn't just ruin your career, Grace," Bridget Colton revealed, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional gravity. "They paid off federal auditors to suppress your father's original safety reports."
Vincent walked behind my chair, placing his broad, warm hands firmly over my shoulders, his strength anchoring me completely against his chest.
"Where is Richard Whitmore tonight, Marcus?" Vincent asked his security chief.
"He's at the St. Regis Ballroom, boss," Marcus Vance reported. "Richard and Vanessa are hosting an emergency victory dinner with thirty high-society syndicate council members, preparing to announce a forced takeover of the Moretti shipping berths."
Vincent leaned down, his lips brushing against my temple, his baritone dipping into a quiet, lethal vow.
"Are you ready to claim your ten million dollars, Grace?" Vincent asked gently.
May you like
I stood up from the leather chair, looking into the eyes of the man who had canceled his engagement for me, feeling an unshakeable, radiant peace and sovereign strength bloom in my chest.
"I'm not taking ten million, Vincent," I answered softly. "I'm taking everything they own."
