Chapter 4 - The War in the BoardroomBy 10:00 A.M. the following morning, the news that Alexander Cole’s wife had filed for divorce and sole custody detonated across the financial sectors of New York and Boston.

Shares of Cole Global Infrastructure dropped eight percent in early morning trading as rival developers and aggressive hedge funds smelled blood in the water.

At 2:00 P.M., an emergency session of the Cole Global Board of Directors was convened on the ninety-fourth floor of the Cole Tower in Manhattan.

Sitting around the massive mahogany conference table were fourteen senior board members, corporate litigators, and major equity partners, all discussing the potential financial damage of a public divorce.

I sat at the head of the table wearing a fresh black suit. I hadn't slept in forty-eight hours. My eyes were bloodshot, my jaw covered in dark stubble, but the chaotic weakness that had crippled me on Hannah's porch had been replaced by a quiet, dangerous resolve.

My chief legal officer, Arthur Vance, set a thick leather folder in front of me.

"Alexander," Arthur explained smoothly, "we have prepared a counter-petition. Under Connecticut marital property laws, since Clara refused to sign a prenuptial agreement, we can freeze her personal assets, delay the custody hearings in Suffolk County, and force her to negotiate a private settlement behind closed doors. She won't have the financial reserves to fight a ten-million-dollar legal team for more than six months."

The fourteen board members nodded in agreement, leaning forward in their leather chairs, expecting their ruthless Chief Executive Officer to approve the aggressive legal strategy.

I looked at the counter-petition.

I looked at the legal clauses designed to starve my wife out of court, to treat my marriage like an aggressive corporate takeover, and to turn my daughter's custody into a bargaining chip.

Then I picked up the thick leather folder and tore it cleanly in half.

RIIIP.

The room went dead, breathlessly silent.

Arthur Vance’s jaw dropped in total, speech-bound shock. "Alexander... what are you doing?!"

I tossed the shredded legal documents onto the center of the mahogany table.

"I spent twenty years building this company, Arthur," I spoke. My baritone carried across the silent boardroom, cold, steady, and unshakeable. "I thought money made me a king. I thought power gave me the right to treat the people who loved me like disposable assets."

I stood up from the head of the table, buttoning my suit jacket.

"Effective immediately," I announced, looking every board member in the eye, "I am stepping down as Chief Executive Officer of Cole Global Infrastructure. I am transferring my primary voting proxy to the board's emergency committee."

A collective, horrified gasp swept through the fourteen directors.

"Alexander! You can't walk away from a three-billion-dollar empire over a divorce!" Arthur shouted, jumping out of his chair.

"I'm not walking away from an empire, Arthur," I answered, turning toward the glass doors of the boardroom. "I'm going to earn my family back."
