Chapter 3 - The Price of the MistakeThe street went dead silent except for the steady patter of the rain against the pavement.

I stood on the wet porch, staring past Captain Reyes into the dark hallway of the row house. For a fraction of a second, near the top of the stairs, I saw a tiny shadow step out from behind the banister.

A little girl in yellow pajamas holding a stuffed rabbit.

"Lily..." I gasped, my voice breaking.

The shadow vanished back into the hallway as Hannah pulled the door shut, locking the deadbolt with an iron snap that echoed like a gunshot in the quiet street.

CLICK.

I stood on the porch for ten minutes in the pouring rain, my head resting against the cold wooden door, weeping until my throat was raw. Finally, Marcus stepped up onto the porch, gently placing his hand over my shoulder, guiding my broken frame down the steps toward the idling Maybach.

When I stepped into the rear cabin, my phone was ringing frantically on the leather seat.

I picked it up without looking at the caller ID. "Clara?!"

"Alexander, darling!" Chloe’s voice chirped through the speaker, sweet, light, and completely oblivious to the apocalypse that had consumed my life. "Where did you go? I woke up at the Greenwich estate and the staff said you drove to Boston without leaving a key! When are you sending the car back for me? We have that dinner party at the yacht club tonight!"

I stared at the phone in my hand.

Six months ago, I had thought Chloe was a prize—a young, glamorous woman who validated my success, making me feel young and powerful again. Now, hearing her voice made me feel so profoundly disgusted with myself that I felt physically sick.

"Get out of my house, Chloe," I spoke. My voice was no longer loud or angry. It was a flat, freezing baritone that dropped the temperature inside the Maybach below zero.

There was a long pause on the line. "What... what did you say, Alexander?"

"I said get out of my house," I repeated, every word dropped into the quiet car like a block of heavy granite. "Take your clothes, take your bags, and get out before my security team throws your belongings into the driveway."

"Alexander! You can't talk to me like that!" Chloe shrieked, her sweet demeanor instantly turning into a sharp, bitter rage. "I gave up six months for you! If you throw me out, I’m going to the tabloids! I have photos from the Maldives! I'll ruin your corporate reputation!"

I let out a low, bitter laugh that held zero warmth.

"Ruin it, Chloe," I whispered softly into the receiver. "Because my life is already over."

I hung up the phone, threw it flat onto the floorboards, and smashed it beneath the heavy heel of my leather boot until the screen went completely black.
