Chapter 3 - The Audit of the Stolen LegacyBy 3:00 AM, the penthouse apartment on the top floor of the Vale Tower was quiet, bathed in the soft blue lights of the city.

Julian had arranged for my mother to be transferred immediately via private medical transport from the public clinic to the Vance-Sterling Memorial Hospital—the top private medical center in Manhattan. She was placed in a sunlit VIP suite under the care of three world-renowned specialists, her treatments fully funded for life.
Inside Julian’s sprawling marble kitchen, I sat at the island counter wearing an oversized silk robe, drinking a warm cup of sweet jasmine tea.
Julian stepped into the kitchen, having discarded his suit jacket and tie, his crisp white dress shirt unbuttoned at the throat, his broad shoulders relaxed for the first time all night. He slid a sleek black bank card and a leather-bound folder flat onto the marble counter beside my tea.
"Your escrow account has been fully processed, Lena," Julian said, his baritone low and warm. "The six hundred thousand dollars is liquid and unencumbered. The card gives you unlimited access to our joint household accounts."
I looked at the black card, then up into his dark gray eyes. "Thank you for moving my mother so quickly, Julian. That was more than we agreed to."
"It was the bare minimum for my wife," Julian replied simply, leaning his hip against the counter, studying my face with a deep, quiet intensity.
Before I could answer, Senior Managing Legal Partner Bridget Colton walked into the kitchen, holding a tablet displaying real-time financial ledgers.
"Julian, Chairwoman Lena," Bridget spoke, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional satisfaction. "The initial forensic audit of Vanessa Moretti's proxy accounts over the last five years is complete."
Julian’s posture straightened. "What did you find, Bridget?"
Bridget tapped the screen, displaying three distinct ledgers:
THE EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME: Proof that Vanessa Moretti and her son had secretly diverted $120 million from the Vale Maritime Trust into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands over thirty-six months.
THE FABRICATED INJUNCTION: Intercepted encrypted emails proving Vanessa paid $2 million to a corrupt family court judge to invalidate Julian's original prenuptial agreement hours before his deadline.
THE BENNETT MARITIME TRUST DEEDS: Original corporate titles proving Lena's late grandfather, Arthur Bennett, had been the original legal co-founder of the South Manhattan Docks alongside Julian's grandfather—meaning Lena held inherent heritage equity independent of the marriage contract!
My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the ledger headers displaying my maiden grandfather's name: Arthur Bennett.
"My grandfather... built those docks with yours?" I whispered, my hazel eyes wide with shock.

Julian looked down at the documents, then looked back at me with a profound, unshakeable look of awe.
"Vanessa thought she was forcing me into a trap with a random cleaner," Julian murmured softly, a dark, triumphant smile curling his lips. "Instead, she brought the true heiress of the Bennett Maritime Trust right back into the boardroom."
