Chapter 1 - The Midnight CovenantThe heavy silence inside the top-floor executive conference suite of Vale Tower was broken only by the steady, digital tick of the wall clock.

11:49 P.M.
I stood beside my yellow cleaning bucket, my hands still smelling of industrial lemon bleach, clutching my faded canvas apron. Julian Vale stood six feet away, his towering six-foot-three frame broad, immaculate, and imposing inside his dark charcoal bespoke suit. His sharp, handsome face—usually frozen in cold corporate arrogance—was etched with an absolute, high-stakes tension.
"Tell me what happens at midnight, Mr. Vale," I said softly, my voice holding firm despite the exhaustion aching in my bones.
Julian looked down at his phone, which buzzed silently on the mahogany table with three incoming encrypted text messages from a sender marked only as V.M. He clicked the screen off, looking back up at me with gray eyes that burned like silver ice.
"Thirty years ago," Julian revealed, his voice a low, gravelly baritone, "my late grandfather established the Vale Maritime Trust—a holding entity containing fifty-one percent common controlling equity over the primary deep-water shipping terminals across New York and New Jersey. Under the terms of his will, if I do not present a legally registered, court-certified marriage certificate to the trust executors before my thirty-eighth birthday ends at midnight, the entire trust defaults to my stepmother, Vanessa Moretti-Vale, and her son, Julian Jr."
My eyes widened slightly. "Your stepmother... was that the woman in the designer dress who tried to humiliate me earlier?"
"Yes," Julian said, a razor-sharp, bitter smile touching his lips. "Vanessa has spent five years bribing my estate attorneys, bribing judges, and isolating every legitimate partner I tried to bring into my life. She engineered a legal injunction two hours ago that invalidated my previous prenuptial agreement with a high-society socialite she had secretly paid off."
He took two deliberate steps toward me, stopping just inches away.
"If I walk out of this tower unmarried at midnight, Vanessa seizes the docks, liquidates our employee pension funds, and turns Vale Global into a private money-laundering vessel for her family's syndicate. But if I am legally wed to an independent citizen who holds no prior financial contracts with her... the trust locks permanently under my control."
"And you have eleven minutes," I murmured, calculating the sheer madness of it.
"I have a supreme court judge and a notary waiting on a secure video link in my office," Julian said, pulling a platinum signet ring from his pocket. "I have six hundred thousand dollars being transferred into a clear escrow account under your maiden name right now. And I have your condition, Lena: your mother's care is your sovereign right, unmonitored and absolute."
I looked at the cleaning spray in my hand, then thought of my mother lying in that cold clinic room, her medication delayed because my card had been declined twice that morning.

Six hundred thousand dollars meant her doctors were paid for life. It meant a clean apartment, proper food, and no more starving on vending-machine crackers.
"Call the judge, Mr. Vale," I whispered, my chin held high. "Let's get married."
