Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost AcademyBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor executive suite at The Cross Tower overlooking Central Park was locked down under absolute security.

Outside the private elevator banks, eight elite guards from Vance Tactical Security stood watch. Inside, I sat in a high-backed velvet armchair, wearing a warm cashmere sweater provided by Nathaniel's staff, holding a cup of hot tea while private medical technicians tended to the blisters on my feet.
Standing at the floor-to-ceiling glass windows was Nathaniel Cross. He had shed his tuxedo jacket, his dark hair slightly disheveled, his broad shoulders squared against the Manhattan night skyline.
Beside his desk sat Bridget Colton, senior managing partner of Colton & Vance International and one of the most formidable corporate prosecutors on the East Coast.
Bridget opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers flat onto the glass coffee table toward Nathaniel and me:
"Emma," Bridget spoke softly, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional gravity. "The forensic audit into the Bennett Dance Academy Bankruptcy of 2021 is complete."
Nathaniel walked over, leaning against the edge of the desk, his gray-blue eyes fixed on my face. "Tell her, Bridget."
Bridget tapped the ledgers:
THE STOLEN ACADEMY TRUST: Forensic evidence proving Richard Sterling and Vanessa Sterling forged Arthur Bennett's signature three days after his death, seizing the $120 million Bennett Foundation real estate trust.
THE HOMICIDE DOSSIER: Newly uncovered security logs from the Chicago studio showing Vanessa Sterling’s private vehicle arriving at the building twenty minutes before Julian Vance fell from the balcony.
THE EMBEZZLEMENT LOG: Proof that Sterling Logistics used the academy's European touring routes to launder $45 million into offshore shell companies in Panama.
My breath caught in my throat. Tears of quiet, long-suppressed rage burned behind my eyelids.
"They ruined my family," I whispered, my voice trembling as I looked up at Nathaniel. "My father died believing our name was tarnished forever. I spent five years hiding in the dark while Vanessa wore diamonds bought with my father's legacy."
Nathaniel crouched flat onto one knee in front of my chair. The ruthless, arrogant billionaire who had offered fifty thousand dollars for a spectacle was gone; in his place sat a man whose eyes burned with a fierce, protective, diamond-hard devotion.

He took my shaking hands into his broad, warm palms.
"They took your stage, Emma," Nathaniel swore softly, his baritone an unshakeable oath that shook the very room. "And tonight, we take their empire. Tomorrow morning, we tear Sterling Logistics down to the dust."
