Chapter 2 - The Shadows in the KitchenBy 9:00 PM, the grand Caruso mansion in Riverdale was quiet.

The twelve syndicate lieutenants had departed in their black armored sedans, leaving behind a heavy, watchful silence across the three-acre gated estate.
In the spacious, sunlit kitchen on the ground floor, six-year-old Emma sat on a high wooden stool near the butcher-block island, swinging her legs happily while finishing her second slice of chocolate cake.
Rachel sat beside her, holding a warm cup of tea, but her mind was spinning in chaotic circles.
Twenty-eight years old, widowed two years ago after her husband died in a construction accident, Rachel had taken the night housekeeping job at the Caruso estate three weeks ago out of sheer survival. She had known Vincent Caruso was a powerful man, but she had assumed he was merely an eccentric real estate mogul.
Now, after watching twelve hardened men tremble when he raised a single finger, she understood the terrifying reality of the world she had walked into.
The kitchen door swung open softly.
Vincent walked into the room.
He had discarded his charcoal suit jacket, now wearing a simple white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, his dark tie loosened at his collar. He looked less like a mob boss and more like an exhausted man carrying thirty years of heavy regrets.
"Is the cake to your liking, Emma?" Vincent asked, walking over to the espresso machine near the sink.
"It's very good," Emma reported proudly. "Better than the school cake."
A faint, genuine smile touched the corners of Vincent’s lips as he poured himself a cup of dark espresso. He turned around, leaning his hip against the counter, looking at Rachel.
"Your daughter has more courage than half the captains sitting at my table, Rachel," Vincent murmured softly.
"She doesn't know who you are, Mr. Caruso," Rachel replied quietly, setting her teacup down. "If she knew... she wouldn't have spoken to you like that."
"No," Vincent disagreed gently, looking straight into Rachel’s eyes. "She spoke to me like that because she carries something this house hasn't seen in thirty years. Honor."
He pulled a thick manila folder from under his arm and laid it flat on the wooden island between them.
"What is this?" Rachel asked, her heart taking a nervous jump in her chest.
"That is a certified employment contract," Vincent revealed. "As of tomorrow morning, you are no longer a night housekeeper, Rachel. You are the private manager of the Caruso household estate."
Rachel stared at the folder in absolute shock. "Estate manager? Mr. Caruso, I don't have experience managing a property like this—"
"You have honesty," Vincent interrupted cleanly. "You protected your child in front of twelve dangerous men, and your daughter reminded me of the vow I broke thirty years ago. Salary is one hundred and twenty thousand a year, full health coverage for Emma, and private housing on the north wing of the estate."
Rachel’s breath caught in her throat. One hundred and twenty thousand dollars was three times what she made working double shifts. It meant rent, medicine, and a future for Emma.
Before she could answer, the kitchen door burst open again.
Marco—Vincent's chief of security—rushed into the room, his face dark with urgent, alarming news.
"Boss," Marco whispered, glancing nervously at Rachel and Emma. "We have a situation at the South Side warehouse. Victor Vance’s crew just intercepted our primary delivery."

Vincent’s face instantly hardened back into stone. The warm, human light in his eyes vanished, replaced by an ancient, lethal focus.
"Take Emma upstairs, Rachel," Vincent commanded softly, setting his espresso cup down. "We'll finalize the paperwork in the morning."
