Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Forgotten DynastyBy 3:00 AM, the blizzard had locked Chicago in an impenetrable white vault, but the private medical wing on the top floor of the Vance Global Building in downtown Chicago was an fortress of total, impenetrable security.

Outside the heavy glass doors, thirty elite Vance Security officers in dark bespoke suits monitored every elevator bank, stairwell, and rooftop helipad. Inside the sunlit suite, six-year-old Lily was fast asleep on a velvet sofa, wrapped in a warm fleece blanket, clutching a brand-new drawing pad and a set of colored pencils I had ordered for her.

Isabella lay in a hospital bed, an IV drip of nutrient boosters and saline restoring color to her pale cheeks. She wore a soft silk robe, her dark hair neatly brushed, her hazel eyes holding a quiet, radiant relief as she watched her daughter sleep peacefully.

Sitting around the central mahogany table in the suite were my security chief, Vincent Vance, alongside Bridget Colton, senior managing partner of Colton & Vance International, and two federal forensic accounting experts.

Bridget Colton opened three thick leather binders bound with red wax seals, sliding high-definition financial ledgers flat onto the table toward me and Isabella:

THE STOLEN MARITIME TRUST: Certified forensic evidence proving Julian Moretti forged Isabella’s death certificate in 2019 to seize $160 million in commercial dock equity from the Vescari Maritime Trust.

THE EMBEZZLEMENT LOG: Bank registries documenting Julian transferring corporate funds into offshore Panamanian accounts to hire private mercenary teams under Moretti Global.

THE HERITAGE EQUITIES: Proof that Isabella Vescari holds forty-nine percent common controlling equity over the South Chicago Commercial Terminals—the exact shipping lanes Julian needed to operate his illegal offshore networks.

My hands clenched into tight, heavy fists flat against the table. The anger that had burned inside me for seven years was replaced by an absolute, crystalline, diamond-hard resolve.

"Bridget," I spoke, my voice low, smooth as silk, and cold as winter ice. "What is the legal status of the Vescari Maritime Trust?"

"Because Isabella is alive and physically present, Dominic," Bridget Colton revealed, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional satisfaction, "every contract, proxy, and corporate transfer signed by Julian Moretti over the last seven years is legally void. Under state and federal maritime law, Isabella holds absolute administrative authority over the docks."

Isabella looked up from her bed, her hands trembling as she took her silver Vescari crest pendant into her fingers.

"He tried to burn us alive, Dominic," Isabella whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks. "He took seven years of Lily's life... he made her beg for two dollars on a freezing street just to buy me soup."

I walked over to my sister's bedside, dropping flat onto one knee, taking her cold hand into my broad, tattooed palm.

"He took seven years, Isabella," I promised, my baritone dipping into an iron oath that echoed through the room. "Today, we take his life, his money, and his empire."
