Chapter 1 - The Trap Beyond the Locked DoorThe heavy wooden door of the third-floor apartment clicked shut with a sharp, mechanical snap that vibrated through the cold, peeling linoleum. Outside in the dim hallway, the sound of a heavy steel deadbolt sliding into place was unmistakable.

Six-year-old Lily squeezed my hand tighter, her tiny red mittens with the holes in the fingers trembling against my massive, calloused palm. Beneath my heavy black overcoat, my broad six-foot-five frame locked into instant, predatory stillness. The intricate dark tattoos covering my neck and broad arms flexed as my hand instinctively drifted toward the custom-engraved Beretta hostlered beneath my jacket.

Beside me, my security chief, Vincent Vance, drew his suppressed sidearm with fluid, silent precision, stepping between the locked door and the mattress where my sister lay.

"Dominic..." Isabella Vescari gasped out, her voice a fragile, raspy thread. At thirty-four, my younger sister was skin and bones, her pale face hollowed by years of hiding, her dark hair tangled against the thin pillow. Yet her hazel eyes burned with an agonizing, terrifying clarity as she thrashed weakly against the thin blanket. "He's outside... he followed her from the bakery..."

"Who, Isabella?" I demanded, my deep baritone dropping into an icy, subsonic register that dropped the temperature of the room to zero. "Who locked this door?"

Before Isabella could answer, a smooth, mocking voice echoed through the ancient, rusted intercom speaker mounted beside the doorframe:

"Seven years is a long time to hide in the dark, Isabella. But I always knew your brother's sentimentality would be your undoing."

Vincent’s posture went rigid. "That's Julian Moretti."

My blood ran colder than the Chicago blizzard howling against the cracked windowpane outside.

Julian Moretti. My own underboss. The man I had trusted to manage the South Chicago shipping terminals, the man who had stood beside me seven years ago while I wept over an empty coffin after the warehouse fire on the river.

"Julian," I growled, stepping toward the speaker, my voice an absolute, lethal promise. "You have thirty seconds to open this door before I tear this building down to its foundation and bury you beneath it."

A cold, arrogant laugh sputtered through the static.

"You don't command anyone anymore, Dominic," Julian sneered over the speaker. "The syndicate elders were informed twenty minutes ago that you went rogue to protect a forgotten ghost. Right now, forty of my private enforcers are surrounding this block. The warehouse fire seven years ago was meant to execute Isabella and clear her forty-nine percent controlling equity in the Vescari Maritime Trust. Today, I finish the job... and take your crown."

CLICK.

The intercom cut to static. Immediately, the heavy scent of gasoline began seeping through the crack beneath the apartment door.

"Dominic! He's burning the floor!" Isabella shrieked, trying to sit up, her body shaking violently with exhaustion.

"Uncle Dominic?" Lily whispered, looking up at me with her wide, innocent brown eyes, her small voice breaking through the smoke. "Are we going to be okay?"

I dropped flat onto one knee in front of my six-year-old niece. I reached out, my massive, tattooed hand gently cupping her soft cheek, my thumb wiping away a single tear.

"Lily," I swore, my voice an unshakeable, diamond-hard oath that shook the very walls. "I didn't find you today just to let the dark take you. Hold onto your mother's blanket."

I stood up to my full six-foot-five height, pulling my pistol, turning to Vincent with a look of absolute, apocalyptic fury.

"Vincent," I roared over the sudden crackle of flames outside the door. "Blow the fire escape window. We are going to war."
