Chapter 6 - The Defense’s Collapse

"Mr. Cole," Judge Vance said, her voice cutting through the silence like a guillotine. "Would you like to stand up and explain to this court why you left your wife bleeding to death on a nursery floor while you posted vacation photos in the Blue Ridge Mountains?"
Derek stood up slowly, his legs visibly shaking. He looked panicked, desperate, and completely unmoored. He glanced back at his mother for guidance, but Elena was staring rigidly at her own lap, refusing to make eye contact now that her complicity had been broadcasted to the entire county.
"Your Honor... please," Derek stammered, his voice cracking pathetically. "Emily... she’s always been overly emotional. She exaggerated her symptoms! My mother told me all women bleed after childbirth! I didn't think it was an emergency—I thought she was just trying to guilt me into canceling my thirtieth birthday trip!"
Judge Vance blinked slowly, leaning forward over her bench.
"Mr. Cole," the judge said softly, a terrifying edge to her tone. "Your wife required three units of whole blood transfusions to keep her heart beating. She suffered second-degree postpartum hemorrhage. And according to your own extracted text messages, you explicitly acknowledged that she was bleeding on your mother’s carpet, laughed about it, and turned your phone on airplane mode so no one could save her life."
"It was a joke! Out of context!" Derek shouted, desperation making him reckless. "Her family is just using their political influence to destroy me! This is a setup!"
"Mr. Cole," Julian interjected smoothly, rising from his chair with a cold smile. "Would you like me to enter your browser history into evidence as well? The searches you made on your phone while driving to the mountains—specifically asking: 'can postpartum bleeding stop on its own without a doctor's help', followed immediately by 'statute of limitations on abandonment charges Tennessee'?"
The color drained entirely from Derek’s face. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He had searched for the medical consequences of leaving me, knew the risks, and chose to drive away anyway.
Judge Vance didn't even wait for Derek’s attorneys to attempt a defense. She picked up her heavy wooden gavel and brought it down with a crack that echoed like thunder through the chambers.
"Based on overwhelming and irrefutable evidence of gross negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and active conspiracy to endanger human life, this court grants all emergency petitions filed by Mrs. Emily Cole," Judge Vance declared, her voice ringing with absolute finality.
"First: Emily Cole is granted immediate, sole physical and legal custody of the minor child Noah Cole, with supervised visitation rights for the father denied pending psychological evaluation.
Second: All joint assets, real estate holdings, corporate shares, and trust funds belonging to Derek Cole are subjected to an immediate, permanent pre-judgment asset freeze and forfeiture in favor of the plaintiff.
Third: Criminal charges of reckless endangerment, willful abandonment, and depraved indifference are hereby bound over to the grand jury for immediate indictment without bail.
Fourth: Elena Cole is formally joined as a co-defendant in the civil liability suit for suborning medical neglect."

Judge Vance dropped her gavel once more.
"Court is adjourned."
