Chapter 5 - The Emergency Hearing

The courtroom on the third floor of the Williamson County Courthouse in Franklin was packed to capacity. Word of the high-profile legal battle between the prominent Cole real estate dynasty and the prominent legal-political Grant family had spread through middle Tennessee like wildfire.
When I walked into the courtroom leaning on my brother Julian’s arm—dressed in a sharp, elegant navy blazer, my postpartum strength slowly returning—every head in the gallery turned in unison.
Sitting at the defense table across the aisle was Derek, flanked by two high-priced divorce attorneys he had hastily hired after spending forty-eight hours in a holding cell before posting bond. He looked disheveled, his expensive shirt wrinkled, his hair unwashed, and his eyes bloodshot from panic and sleeplessness. Sitting directly behind him in the front row of the gallery was Elena Cole, her face carved from stone, her lips pressed into a thin, venomous line of pure hatred as she glared at me.
She thought intimidation would work. She thought money would buy her way out of accountability.
She didn't know my brother was leading the prosecution team alongside a special family court magistrate.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Evelyn Vance," the bailiff called out, his voice booming across the polished oak chamber.
We all stood. Judge Vance—a stern, no-nonsense jurist with thirty years on the bench—strode into the courtroom with an expression of icy disapproval that settled primarily on Derek and his legal team before she took her seat.
"Please be seated," Judge Vance said, adjusting her glasses and looking down at the massive stack of evidentiary files on her desk. "We are here today for an emergency expedited hearing regarding petition for emergency divorce, sole custody, asset seizure, and criminal injunctions filed by counsel for Mrs. Emily Cole. Mr. Julian Grant, you have the floor."
Julian stepped up to the podium, his posture immaculate, exuding absolute calm and lethal professional authority.
"Thank you, Your Honor," Julian began, his resonant voice carrying clearly to every corner of the room. "What this court is about to review is not a routine marital dispute or standard irreconcilable differences. What we have documented here is a textbook case of sociopathic abandonment, medical neglect, and coordinated conspiracy designed to endanger the life of a new mother and her newborn child."
Derek’s lead attorney leapt to his feet, slamming his hand onto the table. "Objection, Your Honor! Counsel is resorting to inflammatory character assassination without substantive proof!"
"Sit down, counselor," Judge Vance said without even looking up. "Mr. Grant has attached medical forensic records, police affidavits, and digital text message transcripts directly to the emergency motion. Your client’s character was assassinated the moment he stepped over his hemorrhaging wife to go hot-tubbing. Overruled. Continue, Mr. Grant."
For the next forty-five minutes, Julian methodically laid out the evidence like a master surgeon.
He projected the text message thread between Derek and Elena onto the courtroom’s large digital display screen for everyone in the gallery to read—including Derek’s own infamous words: 'Stepped over her whining on the rug. She’s bleeding on Mom’s precious cream carpet lol.'
A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom gallery. Several reporters in the back row furiously scribbled notes.
Elena Cole turned an alarming shade of crimson in the front row, shrinking back into her seat as whispered murmurs erupted around her.
Julian then presented Dr. Vance’s formal medical testimony confirming that if my mother had arrived twenty minutes later, I would have died of hypovolemic shock on that very carpet.

When Julian finally sat down, the courtroom was so quiet you could hear the hum of the overhead ventilation system.
Judge Vance looked across the room, her gaze locking onto Derek with a look of undisguised revulsion.
