Chapter 5 - The Legal Settlement(Focus: The dramatic divorce mediation; Owen tries to demand alimony; Clara exposes his hidden offshore accounts and completely breaks his defense.)

The divorce mediation took place in a sterile, white-walled conference room on the 40th floor of a downtown skyscraper. Owen sat across from me, flanked by a cheap, state-funded lawyer he had scrambled to hire. I sat with my legal team, looking calm and prepared.
Owen's lawyer cleared his throat, sliding a document across the table. "Mrs. Vance, my client is currently unemployed due to your actions. As his spouse of seven years, during which he contributed to the household, we are requesting temporary alimony of five thousand dollars a month, as well as a 50% split of the equity in the marital home."
Owen smirked across the table, believing his lawyer had found a loophole to force me to support him.
My attorney didn't even look at the document. He simply tossed it into the trash can next to his chair.
"Mr. Owen," my lawyer said, leaning forward. "We are not paying you a single dime. In fact, you are going to sign this unconditional waiver of all marital assets, right now."
"Are you insane?" Owen scoffed, leaning forward. "I have rights! You can't leave me with nothing!"
"We aren't leaving you with nothing, Owen," I said, leaning over the table, staring deep into his eyes. "We are leaving you with your freedom. For now."
I nodded to my lawyer, who opened a fresh dossier.
"Over the past three years, you didn't just spend corporate money on Marissa," I revealed. "You created a fraudulent consulting firm called Apex Solutions. You transferred over two hundred thousand dollars of our joint savings into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands, intending to hide it before filing for divorce yourself next year. Marissa was helping you launder the money."
Owen’s smirk instantly vanished. His hands began to tremble against the table. "How... how did you find that?"
"You left your financial ledger in an archived backup on our home computer, Owen," I said softly. "The same computer you used to sync your phone messages. I didn't just find your mistress; I found your crimes. If you do not sign this waiver relinquishing the house, the savings, and all rights to alimony, my lawyer will deliver this folder to the federal tax authorities before the clock strikes noon."
Owen’s lawyer looked at the documents in the folder, his face turning pale. He turned to Owen and whispered frantically, "Sign it. Sign it right now or you are going to federal prison for a very long time."
With a shaking hand, Owen grabbed the pen. He signed the divorce papers, stripping himself of every right, every asset, and every claim to the life we had built.

When he finished, he looked up at me, his eyes hollow. "You never loved me, Clara. You were always too cold."
"I loved a man who didn't exist, Owen," I said, taking the signed papers and standing up. "The man sitting in front of me is just a thief who got caught."
