Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Reunion(Focus: Marissa attempts a desperate retaliation by crashing a family gathering; Clara delivers a public humiliation that breaks Marissa's social standing forever.)

With Owen unemployed and facing criminal charges, Marissa found herself completely isolated. The family group chat had turned into a digital courtroom, with our aunts and uncles completely disowning her for what she had done to me.
But Marissa wasn't the type to go down quietly. She believed she could still manipulate her way back into society.
On Sunday afternoon, my parents held a small family gathering at their suburban home to support me through the divorce. It was supposed to be a safe space, a quiet afternoon of healing. But as we sat on the patio, the iron front gate clicked open.
Marissa walked into the backyard.
She was wearing an expensive dress—one I recognized, because I had bought it for her birthday last year—and she carried herself with a defensive, arrogant posture. Beside her walked Owen, looking like a defeated dog, holding her purse.
"What are you doing here?!" my father roared, standing up from his chair so fast he knocked over his drink. "Get out of my house before I call the police!"
"Uncle David, please, just let me speak!" Marissa shouted, stepping into the middle of the yard, ignoring the looks of pure disgust from our family. She looked directly at me. "Clara, you've had your fun. You took his job, you ruined his name, you threw his things in the dirt. Aren't you satisfied? You've always been the golden child, the one everyone praised. Can't you leave us alone now? We love each other!"
I didn't stand up. I remained seated, holding my cup of tea, looking at her as if she were a mild inconvenience.
"You brought him here, Marissa? To my parents' house?" I asked softly.
"I brought him because we have nothing left to hide!" she bragged, crossing her arms. "You can strip away his money, Clara, but you can't strip away the fact that he chose me over you. He came to my bed every week because you were too cold, too perfect, too boring."
Owen looked terrified, shifting his weight from side to side, clearly realizing that coming here was a massive mistake.
I slowly stood up, walking toward them. I stopped just inches away from Marissa. I didn't slap her. I didn't yell. I reached out, gently adjusting the collar of the dress she was wearing.
"You look beautiful in that dress, Marissa," I whispered, my voice carrying clearly through the silent backyard. "It’s a shame the credit card I used to buy it for you has been cancelled. Along with the lease on the apartment you're currently staying in."
Marissa frowned, her confidence faltering. "What?"
"The apartment you live in is owned by a real estate holding company, Marissa," I explained, a calm, terrifying smile spreading across my face. "A company that belongs entirely to my family trust. I signed the eviction notice this morning. You have twenty-four hours to pack your bags and leave."
Marissa’s eyes widened in horror. She looked at Owen, then back at me. "You... you can't do that! That’s illegal!"
"It’s completely legal, cousin. You violated the moral conduct clause of the lease agreement by using the property for illicit activities funded by stolen corporate money," I said, stepping back. "You wanted my life, Marissa? Well, now you have it. You have Owen, you have his debt, and by tomorrow night, you’ll both have the backseat of his car to sleep in."

My father stepped forward, pointing to the gate. "Get out. Now."
Marissa let out a sharp, frustrated shriek, turning on her heel and storming out of the yard. Owen scrambled after her, tripping over his own feet as the family watched them leave with absolute contempt.
