Chapter 5 - The Poisoned LedgerThe fallout from Salvatore Moretti’s visit was swift and brutal. Within forty-eight hours, reports filtered up through Leo’s intelligence network: Salvatore was actively trying to rally the old-guard families against Antonio, claiming the young boss was distracted, compromised, and unfit to lead because of a civilian woman living in his home.

Worse still, financial irregularities began appearing in the waterfront import manifests managed by Moretti-affiliated shell companies.

It was Sunday morning. The mansion was quiet, the sunlight streaming across the conservatory glass as Maria slept upstairs. I sat at the mahogany desk in Antonio’s study with three cups of cold black coffee, spreading out dense corporate ledgers and shipping logs across the leather blotter. My former training as a senior strategy consultant—the analytical mind I had buried under years of exhaustion and survival—was finally waking up.

Antonio walked in quietly, holding two fresh mugs of coffee. He paused, watching me highlight a series of discrepancies in red ink.

"You haven't slept," he observed softly, setting a mug beside my elbow.

"Neither have you," I retorted, looking up. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and the tension in his shoulders was palpable. "You're spending all your energy hunting Salvatore’s street enforcers when you're looking at the wrong battlefield."

Antonio arched an eyebrow, pulling up a leather chair beside me. "Enlighten me."

"Salvatore isn't trying to start a physical war right now. He knows your security is too tight for a hit," I said, tapping my pen against a highlighted column of figures. "He’s waging an economic war. Look at these import tariffs logged through the South Brooklyn container terminal over the last three months. The numbers don't match the cargo weight declarations by nearly thirty percent."

Antonio leaned in, his shoulder brushing mine as he studied the ledger. His brow furrowed in concentration. "Explain."

"Salvatore is laundering contraband through your legitimate shipping channels, making it look like your supply chain is violating federal import regulations," I explained, tracing the numbers with my finger. "If federal investigators audit your docks using these falsified manifests, the blame falls directly on your primary holding company. He’s setting you up for a federal indictment, Antonio. Not a mob hit."

The silence in the study grew heavy. Antonio stared at the figures, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.

"He’s trying to use the FBI to do what his enforcers couldn't," Antonio murmured, a cold, dangerous light entering his dark eyes. "He thinks by dismantling my legal corporate front, he can break the syndicate’s financial backbone."

"He didn't count on one thing," I said, looking sideways at him.

"What's that?"

"My old corporate auditing firm handled the compliance protocols for those exact terminals four years ago, before I left consulting," I said, a fierce, confident smile touching my lips. "I know every hidden backend database, every shell registry, and every loophole Salvatore is using to forge those manifests."

Antonio turned his head, looking at me with an expression that combined absolute awe, fierce pride, and deep, consuming affection.

"You really are a lethal weapon disguised as a nurse, aren't you?" he whispered, his hand coming up to gently cup my cheek.

"I told you, Antonio," I replied, my breath catching as his thumb stroked my cheekbone. "I used to clean up corporate failures for a living. Salvatore Moretti is just a very poorly managed dumpster fire."

Antonio let out a low, rich laugh—the first genuine laugh I had heard from him since we met—and leaned in, pressing his lips softly against mine. The kiss started slow, hesitant, charged with weeks of unspoken tension, before deepening into something fierce, absolute, and undeniable.

When we finally broke apart, both of us breathless, Antonio rested his forehead against mine.

"Help me take him down, Sophie," he whispered against my lips. "Let's burn his entire empire to the ground."
