Chapter 2 - Forensic Echoes in San Diego

Three states away, Victoria was far from idle. While Christopher booked first-class flights to Phoenix and bragged to associates about his domestic bliss, Victoria sat in her home office, surrounded by three computer monitors displaying live market data, corporate filings, and private investigative reports.
The breakup of her marriage had not been an accident; it had been an orchestrated extraction. For months, Victoria had watched Vextor Dynamics hemorrhage capital into mysterious shell companies registered in Delaware and the Cayman Islands. At first, she had assumed Christopher was merely mismanaging company funds to fuel his expensive lifestyle. But as she dug deeper—using the forensic accounting skills she had quietly honed before taking over the company's financial restructuring—she discovered a much darker reality.
Michelle had not simply stumbled into Christopher’s life as an innocent, sympathetic shoulder to cry on. She had been planted there.
A soft chime sounded on Victoria’s secondary laptop. A secure encrypted file had just landed from her private investigator in Los Angeles, containing a comprehensive financial history of Michelle’s bank accounts prior to her relationship with Christopher.
Victoria opened the PDF, scrolling past rows of data until her eyes locked onto a series of wire transfers dated nearly two years ago—right around the time Christopher and Victoria had begun their fertility treatments. The sender of the funds wasn't a corporate entity or an anonymous donor.
It was Julian Lawson.
Christopher’s estranged, disgraced uncle. The man banished from the family estate decades ago after attempting to embezzle from the Lawson Trust and running unregulated, ethically dubious reproductive research clinics across the Southwest.
Victoria leaned back in her leather executive chair, her mind racing as the pieces of the puzzle violently snapped into place.
It wasn't a coincidence that Michelle had suddenly appeared in Victoria’s social circle three years ago, seamlessly worming her way into their home, offering friendship, and spending endless hours with Christopher while Victoria was traveling for corporate negotiations. Michelle hadn't been a friend at all. She had been an operative—an agent deployed by Julian Lawson to infiltrate Christopher’s life, manipulate his fragile ego, and orchestrate a calculated breach of the Lawson bloodline.
And the twins?
Victoria’s breath hitched. If Julian Lawson was financing Michelle, and if the fertility treatments Christopher and Victoria had undergone had mysteriously failed despite neither of them having medical issues... could it be that Christopher’s sterile arrogance had been exploited in ways even he didn't comprehend?
Her phone chimed. It was an email from a trusted medical contact at the fertility clinic in La Jolla where she and Christopher had spent countless hours.
“Subject: Inquiry regarding patient file #8841 - C. Lawson / V. Hayes.
Victoria, following your legal request for record preservation, our internal audit team re-analyzed the sample handling logs from your second year of treatment. We discovered an anomaly in the lab technician shift logs. A temporary technician—contracted through an external biomedical agency tied to Julian Lawson’s former research network—had unsupervised access to the cryo-storage vault during the exact window when your genetic material was cataloged. We cannot legally confirm specimen tampering without a court order, but the probability of cross-contamination is ninety-nine percent.”
Victoria stared at the screen, a cold, numb fury washing over her veins.
They hadn't just cheated on her. They hadn't just replaced her. They had manipulated her very biology, using her marital home as a breeding ground for a bizarre genetic experiment orchestrated by a disgraced patriarch seeking to reclaim his stake in the Lawson empire through the back door.
Christopher thought he had won. He thought he was walking into the Phoenix estate as the triumphant patriarch presenting a glorious new generation to his mother.
He had no idea that he was walking directly into a trap set by his own family history—a trap that Victoria was about to spring with surgical precision.
She closed her laptop, stood up from her desk, and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the Pacific Ocean. She picked up her phone and dialed a familiar, heavily encrypted number.
“Marcus?” Victoria said calmly when the line connected.
“Go ahead, Victoria,” the deep, authoritative voice of the Lawson family’s primary legal counsel replied.

“You can tell Evelyn that the package is in transit,” Victoria said, a faint, dangerous smile playing on her lips. “And make sure the DNA testing kit is waiting in her study before Christopher arrives this Friday. We wouldn't want any misunderstandings about family heritage, would we?”
“Understood,” Marcus murmured, a dry chuckle escaping his throat. “The matriarch is already waiting by the door.”
