Chapter 4 - The Breach at DawnThe storm broke just before 3:00 AM on a freezing Thursday morning.

The security alarms didn't go off with a wail; instead, silent red indicator lights flashed frantically across the master control panels on the estate’s ground floor.

I woke up instantly in the comfortable staff quarters on the west wing, clutching my chest as the distant sound of shattering glass echoed through the corridor. Mia was sleeping soundly in her small cot beside my bed, breathing softly.

Clack-clack-clack.

Boots on hardwood. Muffled shouts. The unmistakable metallic click of firearm safeties being switched off.

Someone had breached the perimeter.

Panic surged through my veins like liquid fire. I threw off the blanket, grabbed a heavy wool robe, and locked the bedroom door from the inside. I scooped Mia gently out of her cot—she stirred sleepily, burying her face in my neck—and retreated into the reinforced walk-in closet in the corner of the room, pulling a heavy laundry basket in front of the door to hide the gap.

My phone was in my hand, my trembling fingers dialing Renzo Moretti’s emergency encrypted number.

It rang twice before a raspy, hurried voice answered.

“Elena? Speak.”

“Renzo! Someone’s in the house! I heard glass break near the west wing!” I whispered frantically into the receiver, tears streaming down my face.

“Stay in your room, Elena. Lock the door and do not make a sound,” Renzo commanded, his voice dead serious, punctuated by the faint pop-pop of a silenced pistol echoing in the distant hallways. “Marcus Vance made his move. He’s trying to hit the boss through his inner circle. Security is neutralizing the intruders now.”

Before I could reply, a heavy, violent thud shook the hallway outside my bedroom.

Someone was trying to force our door.

Wood splintering.

My breath hitched. I clamped my hand over my own mouth to stop myself from sobbing aloud, holding sleeping Mia so tightly against my chest that she let out a tiny Whimper.

“Mommy...?” she whispered sleepily.

“Shh, baby, shh,” I breathed, pressing my face into her curls.

Suddenly, the bedroom door crashed open with a deafening splinter of wood and shattered brass locks. Heavy footsteps stomped across the hardwood floor.

“Check the quarters!” a harsh, unfamiliar voice snarled. “Vance wants everyone tied to the boss eliminated! Leave no witnesses!”

Footsteps approached the walk-in closet.

My heart hammered so hard against my ribs I was certain they could hear it across the room. A shadow fell across the frosted glass panel of the closet door. A hand reached out and grabbed the brass handle.

Click.

Before the door could swing open, a deafening explosion of gunfire erupted from the hallway outside.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

A heavy body slammed against the hallway wall with a dull thud, sliding down to the floor in a lifeless heap.

“Clear!” a deep, commanding voice roared from the bedroom.

It wasn't an intruder.

I pushed open the closet door, my knees trembling so violently I could barely stand. Standing in the center of my wrecked bedroom, holding a smoking Beretta 9mm pistol in his right hand, was Vincent Castalano.

His charcoal suit jacket was gone, his white dress shirt stained with a smear of dark blood along the shoulder, his face set in an expression of absolute, terrifying wrath.

His eyes locked instantly onto mine.

In two long strides, he crossed the room, dropping his weapon into his holster and falling to his knees right in front of me.

“Are you hurt?” Vincent demanded, his hands gripping my shoulders, his chest heaving as he scanned every inch of my body. “Did they touch you?!”

“We’re... we’re fine,” I sobbed, shaking uncontrollably as I clung to Mia. “You’re bleeding—”

May you like

“It’s a graze,” Vincent dismissed instantly, his fierce gaze softening as he looked at terrified little Mia, who was blinking sleepily at the smoking gun on the floor. He gently reached out, pulling both of us into his arms, pressing us fiercely against his solid chest.

“It’s over,” Vincent murmured into my hair, his voice thick with raw emotion. “Marcus Vance is dead. His men have been neutralized. You are safe.”
