Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the BoardroomMorning sunlight flooded the penthouse, but the warmth did little to thaw the knot of anxiety twisting inside my stomach. By 8:00 AM, Luca had placed a laptop, a thick stack of legal briefs, and a cup of black coffee in front of me at the dining table.

"If Conrad wants to play dirty, we change the rules of the game," Luca said, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite me. "My legal team spent the night pulling every corporate filing, LLC registration, and patent associated with the Mercer waterfront development. Do you know what we found?"

I shook my head, my eyes gritty from a sleepless night.

"Every single foundational blueprint was registered under a holding company called WE Enterprises," Luca said, a rare, sharp smile touching the corner of his mouth. "Incorporated eleven years ago. Before you and Conrad were married. And the sole beneficiary of WE Enterprises is Winifred Ellis."

I stared at him in disbelief. "I... I forgot about that company. I set it up when I was consulting independently, before I met him. I never closed it."

"Conrad was so arrogant, so blinded by his own greed, that when he stole your plans and submitted them under his corporate umbrella, he never bothered to check the foundational intellectual property rights," Luca explained, sliding a document across the table. "He transferred your designs into a public-facing subsidiary, but the underlying patents still belong to your dormant entity. Legally, Conrad King is guilty of corporate espionage, intellectual property theft, and securities fraud."

The magnitude of what Luca was saying washed over me. For ten years, I had believed I was completely powerless, trapped inside a glass cage of Conrad’s design. I had thought my mind was my only weapon, and even that had been suppressed. But here, laid out in black and white, was proof that I hadn't just built his empire—I had accidentally locked the back door with my own name.

"What do we do?" I asked, my voice steadying. The fear that had paralyzed me for years was beginning to curdle into something else: cold, calculated fury.

"We strike before he does," Luca said smoothly. "Today is the emergency board meeting of King Developments. Conrad called it to announce the expansion phase of the waterfront project and, no doubt, to issue a statement regarding his 'unwell' wife who required private medical care. We are going to crash it."

Two hours later, I stood in front of the mirror in a tailored charcoal pantsuit Luca had had delivered—sharp, professional, and uncompromising. I pulled my hair back into a sleek knot, pinning my mother’s gold earrings to my lobes. When I looked at my reflection, the frightened, submissive woman on the bathroom floor was gone. In her place stood the strategist companies used to call when failure was knocking at the door.

Luca waited by the private elevator, wearing a dark bespoke suit that radiated quiet menace. He looked at me, approval flashing in his dark eyes. "Ready?"

"Let's go ruin an empire," I said.
