Chapter 3 - Shadows in the LightA gilded cage is still a cage, especially when the bars are forged from blood, money, and dangerous secrets.

Three weeks passed in a blur of luxury and quiet recovery. Under the care of Vincent’s private medical team, the agony in my arm faded into a dull, manageable ache. The fiberglass cast was replaced with a smaller, sleek brace.

For the first time in five years, I was allowed to breathe without fear. I was given custom-tailored designer clothes, exquisite meals prepared by private chefs, and a sprawling suite that felt like a sanctuary.

Yet, I was not blind. I saw the armed men stationed in the corridors. I saw the way Mateo whispered in hushed tones to Vincent in the dark corners of the penthouse. The Moretti empire was under siege, and my presence had ignited a powder keg.

One evening, unable to sleep, I wrapped a cashmere shawl around my shoulders and walked out onto the private terrace overlooking the Hudson River. The night air was crisp and cool.

Standing at the edge of the terrace was Vincent. He had stripped off his suit jacket, his dark shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He held a lit cigarette between his fingers, thin wisps of smoke drifting into the night sky.

"You should be sleeping, Lena," he said without turning around. He always knew when I entered a room.

"I couldn't sleep," I replied softly, stepping up beside him at the marble railing. "You look troubled."

Vincent took a slow drag from his cigarette, his jaw tight. "The council meeting is tomorrow night. Every major syndicate leader in the tri-state area will be there. The Lucani family, the Russian Bratva, and Mark’s uncle, Alderman Hayes."

"Why are they meeting?" I asked, my anxiety spiking.

"Because of you," Vincent said, turning his dark eyes to look at me. "Mark’s uncle is claiming I crossed an unforgivable boundary by taking a married woman from her home and harming a citizen without syndicate approval. He’s trying to rally the other families to declare war on the Morettis."

I felt a sudden, crushing weight on my chest. "Vincent... this is my fault. I brought this chaos to your door. If I leave—if I just disappear—"

Before I could finish the sentence, Vincent’s hand caught my jaw gently, forcing me to look directly into his eyes. His touch was warm, firm, and electrifying.

"Don't ever say that again," Vincent commanded quietly, his thumb tracing the curve of my cheekbone. "You didn't bring chaos. You brought clarity. I have spent ten years ruling this city out of duty, surrounded by snakes and traitors. The night you spilled coffee on my shoes at that diner, you looked at me with pure, honest eyes. You didn't know who I was, yet you showed me genuine kindness."

My heart hammered against my ribs, not out of fear, but out of something far deeper, far more dangerous.

"Vincent..."

"I don't regret taking you, Lena," he whispered, his face inches from mine. "I would burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone put a hand on you again."

The intensity in his eyes breathed life into a part of me that I thought had died years ago. I leaned slightly into his hand, feeling the immense strength radiating from him.

Suddenly, a red laser dot flickered across the stone floor of the terrace, moving rapidly toward Vincent’s chest.

"Vincent, look out!" I screamed, throwing my body into his.

THWACK.

A silenced bullet slammed into the marble pillar right where Vincent had been standing, spraying sharp stone chips everywhere.

Vincent acted instantly. He wrapped his arms around my waist, tackling us both to the hard stone floor as a hail of silenced gunfire shattered the glass doors of the penthouse.

"Mateo!" Vincent roared into his wrist communicator while keeping his body pressed over mine, shielding me entirely from the incoming fire. "Sniper on the south rooftop! Lock down the building!"

Alarms began to blare throughout the penthouse—red lights flashing, security shutters slamming down over the glass windows. Outside, shouting and distant gunfire echoed through the night.

Vincent looked down at me, checking every inch of my face. "Are you hit?"

"I'm fine," I gasped, holding onto his shoulders, my heart pounding violently. "Are you?"

"I'm whole," he said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying dark rage. The soft, gentle man from moments ago vanished completely, replaced by the lethal Don of New York.

He pulled a sleek black sidearm from his shoulder holster, helping me up as Mateo smashed through the reinforced doors with four armed guards.

"Boss! It’s a hit squad sent by the Lucani family!" Mateo shouted over the siren. "They're breaching the lower garage!"

Vincent’s eyes burned with cold, merciless fire. He turned to me, pressing his hand against the back of my neck, kissing my forehead with fiercely protective intensity.

"Go with Mateo to the panic room, Lena," Vincent ordered. "It's time I reminded New York why my family rules it."
