Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Romano EstateWhen Tyler slinked away into the back of a rideshare after recognizing the security camera overhead and realizing he was outmatched by the city's most powerful underground kingpin, my legs finally buckled beneath me. Matteo caught me gently by the elbow before I hit the concrete, his touch firm yet entirely respectful, free of the predatory ownership I had lived under for years.

The vehicle glided through the rain-slicked streets of Chicago, eventually pulling through massive wrought-iron gates into the heavily guarded perimeter of the Romano estate in the Gold Coast district. The sprawling limestone mansion was a fortress of Old World elegance and modern digital security, but far from feeling like a prisoner, I was led into a warm, sunlit guest suite by an elderly, kind-eyed housekeeper named Elena who treated me with immediate, maternal gentleness. Matteo did not hover or demand explanations; instead, he left me in the capable hands of medical staff who documented the angry red bruising around my wrist and provided clean clothes, a hot meal, and a secure sanctuary where Tyler’s shadow could not reach. Standing by the tall French doors looking out over the private courtyard, I realized that my desperate gamble in the restaurant hadn't just saved me from a beating—it had thrust me directly into the inner sanctum of a man the FBI spent decades trying to dismantle, yet for the first time in three years, I felt entirely, unshakeably safe.
