Chapter 3: Descent into the Sub-Basement

Stepping inside, I swept my flashlight beam across the concrete-lined chamber. Shelves of yellowed corporate documents, architectural blueprints, and notarized banking statements lined the walls. But right in the center of the room, resting on a heavy oak pedestaled table, was a large, cracked brown leather-bound book—the original master ledger that had mysteriously vanished from the upstairs office. My breath caught in my throat as I ran my hand over the embossed gold lettering on the cover: Fairmont Pacific / Callahan-Vale Holdings (1989–2005). I opened the heavy volume to the bookmarked center pages, and as the beam of light illuminated the entries, the full, horrifying scope of Preston and Vivian’s conspiracy laid itself bare. There was my mother’s signature alongside a notarized equity agreement proving she owned seventy percent of the property’s foundational land title. But attached to that page was a much more recent document—a corporate share transfer dated just eighteen months ago, bearing what looked like my mother’s signature signing over her entire controlling stake to Vivian Vale for the sum of exactly one dollar. My stomach churned violently. My mother had passed away in a hospice bed while paralyzed by a degenerative neurological condition that left her unable to even hold a pen. She hadn't signed that document. Forgery. Vivian and Preston had systematically stolen my inheritance while my mother was dying, and now they were using stolen assets to finance their corporate expansion with Camille. Gripping the ledger tightly against my chest, I turned toward the vault door, only to find the heavy steel portal swinging shut—and the ominous, heavy click of a deadbolt locking from the outside.
