Chapter 7 - A New Dawn

Three months later, the rain had cleared, leaving Boston bathed in the crisp, golden sunlight of early autumn.
The Crosswell clinic had undergone a complete renovation. The underground sub-levels were secure, the compromised management had been permanently replaced, and the medical wing was operating smoothly under my direct supervision as head of clinical trauma operations.
Upstairs in the forty-seventh-floor penthouse, the atmosphere was entirely different.
The heavy velvet curtains were pulled wide, letting the bright afternoon sun flood across the hardwood floors and illuminate the skyline of Boston Harbor.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a simple, elegant ivory silk dress—no crimson silk, no tactical gear, just peace.
Footsteps approached softly from behind, followed by familiar arms wrapping around my waist, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest. Damian rested his chin on my shoulder, looking out at the harbor with me.
“The board meeting went well,” Damian murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the side of my neck. “Mercer’s assets have been fully integrated into our community development fund. We’re officially out of the shadow syndicate business, Clara. From here on out, we build.”
I smiled, resting my hands over his arms. “You sound like a legitimate billionaire developer now, Mr. Cross.”
Damian chuckled, a deep, resonant sound that vibrated against my back. He turned me around in his embrace so I was facing him, his dark eyes shining with a warmth and devotion that only I was privileged to see.
“I told you to stop calling me that,” he teased softly, his fingers gently tracing the line of my jaw.
“Some habits are hard to break,” I smiled, sliding my arms up around his neck.
“Good thing we have the rest of our lives to break them,” Damian whispered.

He leaned down, capturing my lips in a tender, lingering kiss that chased away every lingering ghost of the past. Down below us, Boston bustled with life, completely unaware of the quiet empire of love and strength that had risen from its shadows.
We had survived the gunfire, the betrayal, and the darkness. And as Damian pulled me closer against his heart, I knew that for the first time in my life, I wasn't hiding anymore. I was right where I belonged.
