Chapter 4 - Confessions in the Dark

The sub-level beneath the Crosswell clinic was worlds away from the sterile, polite atmosphere upstairs. It was a subterranean maze of reinforced concrete, heavy steel security doors, and high-tech surveillance systems that bypassed city grids entirely.
Vance Miller sat chained to a metal chair in the center of a windowless interrogation room, his face bruised, his expensive suit wrinkled and stained with sweat. When Damian pushed the heavy door open, Miller flinched violently, shrinking back against the steel chair.
“Mr. Cross! Please—I swear I didn't know they were going to use lethal force!” Miller sobbed immediately, his voice cracking with sheer panic. “Mercer said it was just a scare tactic! He said he just wanted to disrupt your security presence at the gala!”
Damian didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell, threaten, or strike him. He simply walked into the room, his presence alone filling the space with an overwhelming aura of lethal authority, and leaned against the cold concrete wall with his arms crossed over his chest.
“You gave an assassin a firearm inside a ballroom containing five hundred people, Miller,” Damian said softly, his voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. “You endangered my people. You endangered innocent lives.”
“I had debts, Mr. Cross! High-stakes poker debts in the North End!” Miller wailed, tears streaming down his face. “Mercer threatened to kill my family if I didn't cooperate!”
“Your family is currently on a private flight to Zurich, funded by my logistics account, living in a secure safehouse where Mercer will never touch them,” Damian said coldly. “Which means you traded your loyalty, your career, and your freedom for nothing.”
Miller slumped forward, sobbing uncontrollably.
I stood quietly in the doorway, watching Damian handle the betrayal not with blind rage, but with calculated, merciless precision. Beneath the terrifying reputation of Boston’s most feared mafia boss lay a man who honored a code—a man who protected his own, even when they failed him.
After a quiet instruction to his security guards to transfer Miller to federal custody via anonymous tip, Damian walked out of the room, motioning for me to follow.
We stepped into a quiet, dimly lit corridor lined with exposed brick and copper pipes. Before I could process what was happening, Damian gently caught my arm, guiding me into an empty adjacent archive room and closing the heavy wooden door behind us.
The room was quiet, isolated from the rest of the facility.
Damian backed me gently against the sturdy wooden shelving unit, his hands resting on either side of my hips, trapping me in the warm, protective cage of his embrace.
“You keep surprising me, Clara,” he whispered, his dark eyes searching my face in the dim light.
“Is that a bad thing?” I asked, my breath catching as his fingers lightly brushed against the collar of his cashmere sweater I was still wearing.
“It’s dangerous,” Damian murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes. “For two years, I had a rule. No personal attachments. No distractions. In my world, affection is a vulnerability that enemies exploit.”
“Then why bring me here?”
“Because you stopped being a distraction the moment you stepped into my penthouse wearing that crimson dress,” Damian confessed, his voice rough with a raw, buried vulnerability that he never showed the world. “You saw the threat before my best guards did. You stood beside me in the line of fire. And for the first time in my life, Clara... I don't want you to be invisible.”

Before I could answer, his lips met mine.
It wasn't a tentative or hesitant kiss. It was deep, consuming, and charged with all the pent-up tension of two years spent living in the shadows of each other's worlds. My hands instinctively came up, resting against his broad chest, feeling the steady, powerful thud of his heart beneath my palms as I surrendered to the overwhelming pull of him.
