Chapter 7 - The Blueprint of Forever

A year to the day after the horrifying night in Carter Tower, the grand ballroom was transformed once again—not for a charity gala, not for a corporate fundraiser, but for us.
There were no press cameras, no politicians, and no flashing strobes. Just an intimate gathering of people who truly mattered: my mother, whose house was paid for and whose life was secure; my brother, healthy and smiling in the front row; Marcus Vance officiating with a proud, legal grin; and a handful of our closest friends.
I stood at the top of the grand staircase inside Carter Tower—the very place where my old life had shattered into a million pieces twelve months ago.
This time, the doors were wide open.
I wore a simple, elegant ivory gown that hugged my silhouette gracefully. There were no bruises hidden beneath my sleeves, no foundation masking fear, and no secret terrors weighing down my chest. My skin was clear, my posture was tall, and my heart was entirely whole.
As I walked slowly down the marble stairs, the string quartet began to play a soft, timeless melody.
At the end of the aisle stood Ethan. He wore a classic black tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled, his eyes fixed entirely on me with an expression of such fierce, unconditional devotion that my throat tightened with emotion.
When I reached him, he didn't wait for the officiant’s cue. He reached out, took both of my hands in his, and kissed my knuckles right there in front of everyone.
“You look breathtaking,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
“You clean up all right yourself, Mr. Carter,” I teased softly, a bright smile breaking across my face.
The ceremony was short, profoundly personal, and filled with promises that neither of us took lightly. When it came time for the vows, Ethan looked deep into my eyes, holding my hands so tightly it felt like an anchor securing me to the best part of the world.
“I promise to protect you,” Ethan said clearly, his voice carrying across the quiet room. “Not just from the monsters in the dark, but from every storm life tries to send our way. I promise to love you without conditions, to stand beside you without ego, and to cherish every single day we share together.”
“And I promise to love you,” I replied, my voice ringing out steady and true, “not because you saved me, but because you helped me find the strength to save myself.”
When the ring slipped onto my finger and the officiant pronounced us husband and wife, the applause that erupted wasn't the polite, corporate clapping of a charity gala. It was loud, joyous, and overflowing with genuine love.

As Ethan pulled me into his arms and kissed me—deeply, passionately, and with the full weight of a forever we had earned together—I looked out past the gleaming windows of Carter Tower.
The Manhattan skyline stretched out endlessly beneath the golden autumn sun, bright, clear, and wide open. The past was buried in the dark where it belonged. The present was ours. And our future was a sunrise that would never fade.
