Chapter 7 - The True WealthThree months later, the rain was falling softly against the glass windows of a charming, sunlit loft apartment overlooking the Boston harbor.

Ayla stood at the kitchen island, laughing as she stirred a pot of homemade tomato soup while singing quietly along to a song playing softly on the radio. The simple black dress from the Plaza Hotel gala hung framed in a sleek shadow box on the study wall—not as a reminder of humiliation, but as a trophy of the night her life changed forever.

The heavy front door clicked open, and heavy footsteps echoed across the hardwood floors. Strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, and a warm chin rested comfortably on her shoulder.

“You smell incredible,” Matteo murmured, pressing a soft kiss against the side of her neck. He had discarded his suit jacket, wearing a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking less like a feared syndicate boss and more like a man deeply, hopelessly in love.

“It’s just grilled cheese and tomato soup,” Ayla laughed, turning around in his arms and wrapping her arms around his neck. “Are you sure you wouldn't rather be at some high-end charity steakhouse with city councilmen?”

“Never,” Matteo said firmly, burying his face in her hair. “I spent thirty-four years sitting in rooms full of gold and empty promises. Coming home to you... this is the only wealth that ever mattered.”

Ayla smiled, pressing her cheek against his chest, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart.

Her phone buzzed on the counter. She glanced over and saw a text message pop up from Kitty at the hospital: “Hey! Are you and your billionaire husband coming by this weekend for takeout? Owen wants to see his favorite uncle Matteo!”

Ayla chuckled, typing back a quick reply before setting the phone down.

She looked up at Matteo, her eyes shining with quiet, unshakeable happiness. They had survived the galas, the vipers, the corporate corruption, and the shadows of a dangerous world. They had found something rare and unbreakable in a city built on cold stone.

And as Matteo pulled her closer, kissing her with a tenderness that belonged only to her, Ayla knew she would never feel out of place again. She wasn't defined by designer labels or ballroom politics. She was loved—fiercely, completely, and forever.
