Chapter 5 - The Hidden Paper TrailWhile the financial fire was put out, the criminal case against Holden still hung in a fragile balance. Vance Sterling was preparing a motion to dismiss the charges, claiming the signature on the thirty-eight-million-dollar loan was digitally authorized by my private email account.

If he proved that, Holden would walk free, and the civil court would force us into a fifty-fifty divorce settlement.
On a Thursday evening, I sat in my father’s old library in Montecito. The room smelled of old leather books, mahogany wood, and pipe tobacco—the scent of Thomas Norwood.
I had spent three days going through my father’s old personal journals, looking for anything that could help us understand how Holden had managed to bypass our internal security protocols.
As I pulled down a heavy leather volume from the top shelf, a small brass key slipped out from between the pages and clattered onto the hardwood floor.
Attached to the key was a small wooden tag with my father’s neat handwriting: Imperial Suite 402 - Floorboard Safe.
My breath caught in my throat.
I called Sigrid immediately. "Sigrid... my father had a private safe installed in the Grand Meridian in Sedona."
Two hours later, Sigrid and I were back in the Imperial Suite at the Grand Meridian Resort—the very suite Holden had booked for his romantic weekend with Katelyn.
The hotel manager unlocked the door, and we stepped inside.
Following the instructions in my father’s journal, we pulled back the Persian rug beneath the writing desk in the corner. Hidden beneath a wooden latch was a small, heavy iron floorboard safe.
I inserted the brass key and turned it.
The lock clicked open with a heavy mechanical thud.
Inside lay a thick manila folder, a set of USB flash drives, and a handwritten letter addressed to me in my father’s handwriting, dated three weeks before he passed away.
My hands shook as I opened the letter.
My dearest Fiona,
If you are reading this, it means I was right to be afraid. I watched Holden closely during his first three years as Vice President. He is ambitious, clever, and charismatic—but he lacks a soul. He views people as assets to be used and discarded.
I knew I did not have much time left. I could not convince you to leave him then, because your heart was too pure to see his darkness. So, I built a trap.
The flash drives in this safe contain duplicate master logs of all internal Norwood servers. I instituted a shadow protocol—code named 'Norwood-1'—that records every digital signature, every IP address, and every keystroke made on any corporate document across all properties.
If Holden ever forged your name, the master server in this safe recorded the exact device, location, and biometric timestamp of the act.
Protect yourself, my sweet girl. You are stronger than you know.
Love always,
Dad.
Tears streamed down my cheeks as I held the letter against my chest. My father had reached across time, extending his protective hand from beyond the grave to save me one last time.

Sigrid picked up the flash drives, her eyes burning with fierce legal triumph.
"This isn't just proof of forgery, Fiona," Sigrid whispered, looking at the screen of her portable reader. "This contains IP tracking data from three months ago. Holden forged your signature on the loan while sitting in a hotel room in Miami... on a laptop registered to Katelyn Reed."
