Chapter 3 - The Montecito SiegeThe morning sun was rising over the Pacific Ocean when my black sedan pulled into the driveway of our estate in Montecito. The sun illuminated the white Spanish stucco walls, the blooming bougainvillea, and the fountain in the courtyard—a place that had once felt like paradise, but now looked like a gilded cage.

As my car stopped, I noticed a silver Porsche parked near the garage.
My heart did a sudden, furious bump.
I opened the front door with my key and walked into the grand foyer. Sitting on the leather sofa in the living room, holding a glass of my father’s twenty-year-old scotch, was Vance Sterling—Holden’s primary criminal defense attorney, a ruthless legal shark known for getting corrupt executives off the hook.
Beside him sat Holden himself, dressed in a fresh grey suit, looking slightly pale but completely composed. He had been bailed out three hours ago.
"Fiona," Holden said, standing up with a calm, charming smile that made my skin crawl. "You're home."
"Get out of my house, Holden," I said, my voice dangerously quiet. "You have a restraining order served against you as of 6:00 a.m."
Vance Sterling stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "Mrs. Carney, let's be reasonable here. The protective order has a twenty-four-hour grace period for my client to retrieve his personal belongings and corporate files. We are well within our legal rights to be here."
"His personal belongings are in two suitcases by the door," Sigrid Green said, stepping through the front entrance behind me, followed by two armed private security officers I had hired in Sedona. "His corporate files, however, belong to Norwood Hospitality. And you won't be touching a single piece of paper."
Holden’s charm instantly vanished, replaced by an ugly, defensive sneer. He took three steps toward me.
"Do you really think you can win this, Fiona?" Holden whispered, leaning in so only I could hear him. "You think because you had a dramatic little moment in Sedona that you're a CEO? You're a painter! You spend your days looking at flowers! You don't have the stomach for what’s coming!"
"You underestimated me for twelve years, Holden," I said, looking him dead in the eye without flinching. "You thought because I was quiet, I was weak. You thought because I loved you, I was blind."
"I took care of you!" he spat, his face flushing red. "I built that company!"
"You bled it dry!" I yelled back, my voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "You forged my name! You brought your mistress to my father’s hotel! You brought her into our life, and you used my money to buy her clothes, her cars, her apartment!"
Holden chuckled coldly. "Katelyn was twice the woman you ever were. At least she didn't bore me to death."
A sharp silence descended on the room.
I didn't slap him. I didn't cry. I simply looked at the man I had shared my bed with for over a decade, feeling nothing but profound, icy disgust.
"Security," I said calmly. "Escort Mr. Carney and his attorney off my property. If they step foot past the gate again, have them arrested for criminal trespass."
The two security guards stepped forward, grabbing Holden’s arms.
"This isn't over, Fiona!" Holden screamed as he was dragged toward the front doors. "I'm going to take half of everything you own! I'm going to ruin the Norwood name before I'm done with you!"
May you like
The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind him.
I stood alone in the quiet foyer, taking a long, deep breath. The battle lines were drawn, and there was no turning back.
