Chapter 6 - The Verdict of the CourtThe federal courtroom in downtown Manhattan was packed to the gills on a freezing Tuesday morning in January.

Media outlets had caught wind of the spectacular corporate collapse of Blackwood Industries. Flashbulbs blinded me as I walked up the courthouse steps, unshaven, wearing the same wrinkled cashmere coat I’d worn for a week, clutching a single manila folder containing my pro-se legal filings.

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Judge Vance sat behind the elevated mahogany bench, presiding over the final dissolution hearing. To my left sat Elena, flanked by Richard Sterling and Julian Vance. They looked like an impenetrable fortress of wealth, competence, and untouchable family harmony.

To my right sat nobody.

I represented myself because no sane attorney in the city would touch my case after Sterling systematically blacklisted me from every legal firm in the tri-state area.

“We are here today for the final decree in the matter of Blackwood v. Blackwood,” Judge Vance announced, his voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling. “Mr. Blackwood, do you have any final statements to submit regarding the division of assets, corporate receivership, or child custody arrangements?”

I stood up slowly, my legs feeling heavy, my throat tight. I looked across the aisle at Elena. She didn't flinch. She simply looked back at me with calm, steady resolve.

“Your Honor,” I began, my voice raspy and broken. “I contest the complete forfeiture of my assets. I contest the total denial of visitation rights with my son. I admit I made grave personal errors in my marriage, but to strip a father of his name, his company, and his child—it is disproportionate, it is vindictive, and it violates basic principles of equity.”

Judge Vance adjusted his reading glasses, glancing down at the thick stack of audit reports, federal indictments, and custody evaluations submitted by Sterling & Vance.

“Mr. Blackwood,” the judge said, his tone clinical and severe. “You were a fiduciary executive who systematically utilized corporate funds to finance illicit personal activities, committed felony tax evasion across multiple international jurisdictions, and subjected your spouse to severe emotional abandonment while maintaining a fraudulent domestic facade.”

He paused, looking directly into my eyes.

“Furthermore, court-appointed psychological evaluations and guardian ad litem reports confirm that your presence in the minor child’s life presents an ongoing psychological and emotional risk. The petition for sole legal and physical custody granted to Ms. Bellamy is upheld in its entirety. Corporate receivership of Blackwood Industries remains under the control of the majority trust. All motions filed by the defendant are hereby denied.”

The gavel came down with a sharp, echoing crack.

Bang.

It was the sound of a guillotine blade dropping.

My vision blurred. The courtroom lights seemed to bleed together into a blinding white smear. Across the room, I watched Elena pack her leather briefcase, lean over to whisper something to Julian, and smile softly.

They weren't just winning a lawsuit. They were walking out into a bright, secure, beautiful future—a future I had forfeited the moment I decided I was too clever to get caught.

As the bailiffs ushered me out of the courtroom toward the side exit, I caught one final glimpse of Elena through the crowd.

She didn't look back.
