Chapter 1 - The Ring of the Attorney's PhoneThe sharp, relentless vibration of my smartphone broke the suffocating silence of the mahogany study like a gunshot. My fingers hovered just millimeters away from the cream-colored envelope on my desk—the envelope resting beneath Harrison’s altered birth certificate and the diamond tennis bracelet I’d bought for Elena in Aspen.

My breath hitched in my throat. I stared at the screen, watching the caller ID flash a name that felt less like a legal representative and more like an executioner: Richard Sterling, Senior Counsel, Sterling & Vance.
Sterling didn't handle routine domestic disputes. He handled high-stakes corporate dissolutions, hostile takeovers, and multi-million-dollar asset freezes. The kind of man you called when you wanted to dismantle an empire without leaving a single brick standing.
I swiped the green icon, pressing the phone to my ear. My voice, usually smooth and commanding in any boardroom, sounded thin and frayed.
“Sterling. This is Richard Blackwood.”
“Mr. Blackwood,” Sterling’s voice came through the speaker, impeccably calm, dripping with a terrifying professional courtesy. “I trust you found our welcome package in your study.”
“Where is my wife?” I demanded, abandoning all pretense of corporate composure. My chest tightened as I looked at the bare walls where family portraits had hung just days ago. “Where is my son? What kind of sick game is this?”
“It is no game, Mr. Blackwood,” Sterling replied evenly. “Mrs. Blackwood has retained our firm to file an emergency petition for sole physical and legal custody of Harrison, alongside an immediate freeze on all joint marital assets, holding accounts, and corporate real estate portfolios tied directly to your name.”
“She can’t do that,” I scoffed, though the panic hammering against my ribs threatened to suffocate me. “We are married. Our assets are intertwined. Blackwood Industries relies on those holdings. If you freeze those accounts—”
“They are already frozen, Richard,” Sterling interrupted, using my first name with casual, devastating indifference. “As of 6:00 AM this morning, judicial orders were signed by Judge Vance. Your corporate credit cards have been declined, your secondary accounts in Zurich and the Cayman Islands have been sequestered under anti-dissipation injunctions, and a formal summons has been dispatched to your office.”
The world tilted on its axis. Aspen. The private chalet. The marketing coordinator, Isabel. The forged receipts I thought I’d hidden so meticulously.
How could Elena have known? I had covered my tracks. I had used cash for the private jet charter, paid for the chalet through an unlinked shell company, and timed my return from Tokyo down to the exact minute.
“She didn't find out by accident,” I whispered, the horrifying realization dawning on me.
“Mrs. Blackwood is a brilliant forensic accountant, Mr. Blackwood,” Sterling said, his tone sharpening. “She didn't stumble upon your double life. She documented every single transaction, tracked every wire transfer, and archived every digital trail you left behind over the past fourteen months. She simply waited until you handed her the final piece of evidence on a silver platter before closing the trap.”
Before I could form a response, the line clicked dead.

I stood alone in the freezing, disinfectant-scented office, staring down at the cream-colored envelope. My hands trembled as I finally tore it open. Inside wasn't a handwritten note or an emotional plea. It was a single, devastating document: a petition for expedited divorce on grounds of severe marital infidelity, financial malfeasance, and emotional abandonment, accompanied by an inventory of every property, car, and corporate share slated for immediate liquidation.
Elena hadn't just left me. She had executed a corporate-style hostile takeover of my entire existence. And I hadn't even seen the hostile bidder coming.
