Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Julian ThorneTwo days later, the storm outside the penthouse matched the internal reckoning taking place within our walls.

Sloan and I had spent the entire weekend talking—really talking—for the first time in years. We stripped away the corporate armor, the resentment, the unspoken expectations, and the lingering bitterness of our divorce. We talked about why we fell apart, why I ran away to build an empire instead of fighting for our marriage, and how she had survived the darkest months of her life while carrying our child in secret.
Willa slept peacefully between us in her bassinet as the afternoon rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the master suite.
Then my phone buzzed on the nightstand.
It was Vance, my head of security.
I picked up the call on speakerphone. “Report.”
“Mr. Vance, we followed up on Julian Thorne’s little stunt from Friday,” Vance’s deep voice rumbled through the speaker. “We tracked his financial accounts, his corporate shell entities, and his communications logs over the last six months.”
“And?” I asked, my voice dropping into an icy register.
“Turns out Julian wasn’t just stalking Mrs. Vance. He was coordinating with the board members of our primary competitor—Sterling Corp—to orchestrate a hostile takeover of Vance Global while you were distracted by your domestic crisis.”
A cold, dark fury sparked in my chest. He hadn't just tried to destroy my marriage; he had tried to burn my entire empire to the ground while I was distracted by grief and fatherhood.
“Where is he now?” I asked quietly.
“Federal holding cell down in downtown Manhattan,” Vance replied smoothly. “Securities fraud, corporate espionage, harassment, and extortion. The SEC and the FBI picked him up three hours ago based on the financial evidence packet we handed over to federal prosecutors this morning.”
I looked over at Sloan, who was listening intently, a small, triumphant smile touching the corners of her lips.
“Make sure he stays there, Vance,” I instructed. “And tell the legal team I want every single asset he owns seized under civil forfeiture laws. Leave him with nothing.”
“Consider it done, boss.”
The call disconnected with a sharp click.
Sloan reached out, placing her hand over mine. “Is it really over?”
“It’s over,” I assured her, turning my hand over to interlock my fingers with hers. “Julian is going away for a very long time. And our company is secure.”
“And us?” she asked softly, her eyes searching mine for any hint of uncertainty.

I leaned down, pressing my lips to hers in a slow, deliberate kiss that sealed away every ghost of our past.
“We’re just getting started,” I whispered against her mouth.
