Chapter 3 - The Morning AfterThe morning sun broke over the city skyline, casting sharp, brilliant shafts of light across the polished marble floors of the Vance family estate in the exclusive Hillcrest district.

Inside the cavernous, vaulted dining room, Arthur and Margaret Vance sat at opposite ends of a mahogany dining table long enough to host a state banquet. A silver pot of Darjeeling tea steamed gently between them, accompanied by delicate porcelain cups and freshly baked pastries delivered by domestic staff moving in absolute, reverent silence.
Arthur Vance, patriarch of Vance Holdings, adjusted his reading glasses as he scanned the financial section of the morning newspaper, his silver hair impeccably styled, projecting the picture of untouchable corporate nobility.
Margaret poured herself a cup of tea, her face smooth and composed, untouched by the normal anxieties of aging thanks to decades of expensive dermatological upkeep.
— Julian handled the situation at the hospital cleanly, I assume? — Margaret inquired, not looking up from her teacup. — The girl was always somewhat out of her depth in our circle. A quiet settlement, a non-disclosure agreement, and the matter is closed before it can ever touch the press.
Arthur grunted in agreement, turning a page of the newspaper.
— It’s for the best. Victoria comes from an established banking family in Boston; her integration into the family lineage makes strategic sense. The Moretti girl was a temporary lapse in Julian’s judgment during his postgraduate years.
Before Margaret could reply, the heavy double doors of the dining room banged open.
It wasn't a servant entering with a tray.
It was Julian, looking slightly disheveled, his overcoat unbuttoned, his face pale and slick with a fine layer of cold sweat. He wasn't holding his briefcase; his phone was pressed tightly against his ear, his fingers shaking so violently he could barely keep a grip on the device.
— What do you mean the accounts are locked?! — Julian shouted into the phone, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. — I am the executive vice president of Vance Holdings! Check the corporate reserve routing number again!
Arthur lowered his newspaper slowly, a frown creasing his formidable brow.
— Julian. Control yourself. What kind of tone is this to use inside the family estate?
Julian dropped the phone onto the dining table, the screen flashing an error message from the central banking clearinghouse. He stared at his father with eyes wide with raw, unadulterated panic.
— Dad... the primary corporate operating accounts are frozen, — Julian breathed, his voice cracking. — All of them. Payroll bounced five minutes ago. The commercial real estate loans in downtown are triggering default notices. Someone just slapped an emergency federal injunction on every single asset under the Vance Holding umbrella.
Margaret’s teacup slipped from her fingers, shattering against the porcelain saucer as dark brown liquid spilled across the white linen tablecloth.
— Frozen? — Margaret gasped, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the parquet floor. — That’s impossible! Our capital reserves are backed by state-chartered institutions! No prosecutor has the jurisdiction to freeze—
— It’s not a prosecutor, — a cold, unfamiliar voice echoed from the doorway of the dining room.
All three members of the Vance family snapped their heads toward the entrance.
Standing there was Sarah Sterling, impeccably dressed in a razor-sharp charcoal pantsuit, carrying a thick leather briefcase. Behind her stood two uniformed federal marshals and my sister Sarah, who wore a small, knowing smile that could cut glass.
Arthur stood up from his chair, his face reddening with indignant rage as he puffed out his chest.
— Who the hell are you?! — Arthur bellowed, storming toward the doorway. — And how dare you trespass on private property? Get these men off my estate immediately or I will have your licenses revoked before noon!
Sarah Sterling didn't flinch. She simply reached into her briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of legal documents bearing federal seals and judicial signatures, and tossed them carelessly onto the mahogany table right beside the shattered teacup.
— Arthur Vance, you are no longer in a position to threaten anyone, — Sarah Sterling stated calmly, her voice ringing with absolute authority. — By order of the Federal District Court, acting on forensic evidence provided by the estate of the late Mateo Moretti, all personal and corporate assets belonging to the Vance family are hereby seized under suspicion of systematic racketeering, securities fraud, and multi-million-dollar embezzlement.
The silence that followed was absolute.
Julian staggered backward, his knees hitting the edge of the sideboard as the color drained entirely from his face.
— Moretti... — Julian whispered, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. — No. That’s impossible. Elena doesn't have access to... she’s nobody! She’s just an orphan from a working-class background!
May you like
— She is the sole legal heir to the Moretti forensic archives, Mr. Vance, — Sarah Sterling replied with a thin, venomous smile. — And she has just signed the execution order for your entire family’s financial survival.
Margaret let out a low, pathetic wail, collapsing back into her chair as the walls of the golden cage she had spent a lifetime building finally caved in around her.
