Chapter 5 - The Gala at the Skyline ClubThe Skyline Club was the crown jewel of Blackridge’s elite social scene, perched on the top floor of the newly constructed Cross Financial Tower overlooking the frozen river valley. Chandeliers of imported Bohemian crystal cast a dazzling, diamond-like brilliance across the polished marble floors, while waiters in pristine white jackets circulated with flutes of vintage champagne.

Tonight was supposed to be Daniel Reeves’ crowning achievement.

Standing beside Madeline Cross near the floor-to-ceiling windows, Daniel looked every bit the corporate conqueror. His tuxedo was custom-tailored, his smile dazzling, and the diamond cuff-links catching the light were a gift from his future father-in-law, Grant Holloway. Around the room, regional executives, politicians, and bankers buzzed with excitement, celebrating the official signing of the riverfront development contract—a multi-million-dollar deal that would turn protected municipal land into private luxury estates.

“To the future,” Grant Holloway toasted, raising his glass as a knot of admiring businessmen gathered around the couple. “To vision, ambition, and knowing how to sweep away the dead weight to make room for greatness.”

A ripple of polite, sycophantic laughter moved through the group.

Daniel glanced down at Madeline, feeling a sudden surge of triumphant pride. Leaving Emma Parker behind in the dust had been the best decision of his life. She had been safe, predictable, and utterly boring—a anchor dragging him down into the mediocre middle class. Look at him now. Master of the city, standing at the summit of wealth and power.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the private entrance of the Skyline Club swung open.

The murmurs in the room died away, replaced by an abrupt, suffocating silence.

Daniel turned toward the entrance, his triumphant smile freezing on his face.

Walking through the double doors was Nathaniel Mercer.

The syndicate boss wore his signature charcoal-gray suit, his expression carved from stone, his cold gray eyes scanning the room with absolute detachment. But it wasn't Nathaniel’s presence that made the breath catch in Daniel’s throat.

It was the woman walking gracefully on his arm.

Emma Parker.

She wore a backless emerald-silk evening gown that hugged her figure with effortless elegance, a diamond-encrusted pendant sparkling against her throat, and heels that clicked against the marble floor with the sharp, rhythmic precision of a marching drumbeat. Her hair was styled in cascading waves, and her expression was one of cool, untouchable poise.

She didn't look like the humiliated, crying clerk sitting alone at table nineteen just a week ago. She looked like royalty.

Whispers erupted instantly around the room.

“Isn’t that... isn’t that Daniel’s ex?”

“What is she doing with Nathaniel Mercer?”

“Good lord, look at that dress—that’s a couture piece from Milan. You can’t even buy those in Wyoming.”

Grant Holloway’s face flushed a deep, mottled purple. He set his champagne glass down so hard the stem shattered against the tray, cutting his finger, though he didn't even seem to notice.

Daniel pushed his way past the crowd, his face twisting in a mix of fury and sheer disbelief. He marched straight down the aisle until he stood directly in front of Nathaniel and Emma, blocking their path.

“Emma?” Daniel hissed, his voice trembling with humiliated rage. “What the hell are you playing at? Have you completely lost your mind? Marching in here looking like a fool on the arm of a—of a criminal?”

Emma stopped. She didn't flinch. She looked down at Daniel with the detached clinical curiosity one might reserve for a particularly annoying insect.

“Watch your tone, Daniel,” Emma replied, her voice smooth, calm, and carrying a razor-sharp edge. “You’re speaking to the lead acquisitions analyst for Pinehaven Holdings. And you’re standing in my way.”

Daniel let out a harsh, incredulous laugh. He looked at Nathaniel, expecting the syndicate boss to brush the pathetic little clerk aside. Instead, Nathaniel simply slid his hand a fraction of an inch higher on Emma’s waist, his gray eyes fixing on Daniel with a look of pure, predatory amusement.

“She speaks the truth, Reeves,” Nathaniel said, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that echoed across the silent room. “And as for playing games... I believe you and your future father-in-law are the ones about to lose your license to play.”

Before Daniel could respond, the private elevator doors at the end of the hall dinged loudly.

Half a dozen men in dark federal suits stepped out into the ballroom, led by a stern-looking woman holding a thick leather briefcase.

“Grant Holloway? Daniel Reeves? Arthur Pendelton?” the federal agent called out, flashing a gold badge that caught the chandelier light. “We have federal warrants for your arrest on charges of wire fraud, municipal forgery, interstate securities manipulation, and conspiracy against federal land trusts.”

The ballroom descended into utter, chaotic pandemonium.
