Chapter 4 - Fire in the Glass Fortress

The quiet sanctuary of the penthouse transformed into a war zone in a matter of seconds. Heavy steel blast doors dropped automatically over the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, sealing the upper level into a reinforced bunker, but the muffled sound of gunfire echoing up the central elevator shaft told us our time was running out.

"How many men?" I asked, my voice surprisingly steady as I shoved the leather journal into my backpack and zipped it shut.

"At least six," Ethan replied, his eyes scanning the security monitors where thermal imaging showed black-clad figures moving methodically through the lower levels, bypassing standard alarms with military-grade decryption gear. "They aren't local thugs. They’re professional extraction specialists. Which means someone inside my own corporate security network sold us out."

"My uncle," I said coldly, the betrayal solidifying into pure, tactical clarity. "Marcus knew we were coming here. He’s the only one besides Volkov who knew my father’s full linguistic profile and your penthouse address."

Ethan didn't blink. He grabbed my wrist, pulling me away from the desk toward a concealed reinforced panic room hidden behind a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf. "In. Now."

"No," I pulled my arm back, stepping up to the holographic console. "If we hide in a bunker, they’ll just plant explosive charges and burn this entire floor to the ground. We need to fight back on our terms."

Ethan stared at me, sheer disbelief flashing across his face for a split second before a dark, appreciative grin touched his lips. "You’ve got ice in your veins, Maya Vance. What do you suggest?"

"The ciphers," I said, tapping furiously on the keyboard. "My father left a secondary defense protocol embedded in the linguistic database. If I broadcast the decrypted financial records of Project Icarus to every major news outlet, federal banking regulator, and Interpol node simultaneously, Volkov's entire international network will be exposed before these men even make it through the final security door."

"Do it!" Ethan barked, raising his weapon as he pivoted to face the heavy iron study door.

Heavy thuds echoed from the hallway. Someone was slamming a thermal breaching charge against the reinforced hinges.

My fingers flew across the mechanical keys, inputting the master decryption key derived from my father's personal signature. The progress bar on the main monitor surged: 10%... 45%... 80%...

Boom!

The study door blew inward in a cloud of acrid white smoke, sending splinters of wood and iron flying across the room. Two men in tactical armor and night-vision goggles charged through the smoke, automatic rifles raised.

Ethan fired twice.

The first mercenary dropped instantly, tumbling backward into the hallway. The second mercenary raised his rifle to return fire, but before he could pull the trigger, I grabbed a heavy brass antique globe off the side table and hurled it with all my might straight into his face. The man staggered back, blinded for a crucial second.

Ethan didn't hesitate. He closed the distance, slamming the butt of his pistol into the mercenary’s helmet, sending him crashing unconscious to the floor.

"Progress bar at ninety-nine percent!" I yelled over the blaring alarms.

Across the holographic displays, green checkmarks flashed across the screen as gigabytes of encrypted evidence, offshore bank accounts, assassination logs, and political payoffs flooded the global internet, hitting every major news wire and federal investigative database across the world simultaneously.

Ethan grabbed my arm, yanking me toward the private emergency staircase tucked away in the back of the study. "The servers are wiped and the data is out. It’s over for them. Now we run!"
