Chapter 7 - The Empire We BuiltSix months later, the spring sun over Chicago was warm, bright, and completely unclouded.

The grand ballroom of the Chicago Grand Hotel—the very same room where the Starlight Charity Gala had descended into chaos a year ago—was now filled with the soft, elegant melodies of a live string quartet, the scent of fresh white roses, and the quiet laughter of family and trusted friends.
There were no masked donors, no hidden assassins, and no corporate traitors.
Standing in front of a massive floral arch at the altar, I adjusted the cuffs of my bespoke ivory silk dress, looking down at the tiny, perfect bundle sleeping peacefully in my arms.
Little Leo Bellardi—born with his father’s stubborn dark hair and slate-gray eyes—let out a soft, contented sigh, completely undisturbed by the hundreds of guests watching us.
Heavy footfalls approached behind me.
Strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around my waist, pulling me backward against a solid, warm chest. Dominic rested his chin on my shoulder, looking down at our son with an expression of such fierce, unadulterated tenderness that it still sometimes made my breath catch.
He was dressed in a meticulously tailored black tuxedo, completely recovered from the wounds of that terrible night, looking every bit the untouchable king of the city. But to me, he was simply home.
"You look breathtaking, Mrs. Bellardi," Dominic whispered, pressing a soft kiss against my neck.
"You whispered that exact same thing to me when we were dodging bullets in an alleyway," I teased quietly, turning my head to smile at him.
"And I meant it then just as much as I mean it now," he murmured, his dark eyes softening as he reached out to gently stroke Leo’s tiny cheek. "Though I must admit, I prefer this setting significantly more than a burning estate."
"Me too," I smiled.
Out in the ballroom, I caught a brief glimpse of my father talking quietly with Arthur Pendelton, both of them smiling as Sterling & Associates thrived under completely restructured, honest management. And somewhere far away, in a federal holding facility in New Jersey, Derek Hall was busy learning what it truly meant to face the consequences of a life built on lies.
None of that mattered anymore.
The past was a locked room, buried deep beneath ash and iron.
Dominic took Leo carefully into his arms, holding our son with a practiced, absolute gentleness that proved the most dangerous man in Chicago was completely, defenselessly wrapped around our fingers.
He looked down at me, his slate-gray eyes shining with absolute devotion.

"We built an empire out of fire and secrets, Chloe," Dominic said softly, his voice carrying across the quiet altar. "And I would burn the world down a thousand times over just to keep you safe."
I smiled, leaning up to kiss him as the string quartet swelled into a triumphant, beautiful melody, ready to face whatever tomorrow brought—hand in hand, side by side, forever.
