Chapter 7 - Dawn Over the ValleyTwo months later, the desert sunrise painted the sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.

The war for Phoenix was over. With Victor Vance behind bars and the corrupt officials exposed through the federal indictments recovered at the warehouse, the Vale syndicate stood stronger and cleaner than it had in a decade.
I stood on the stone balcony of the Vale Estate, wearing a simple silk dress, holding a steaming mug of coffee. The mountain air was warm and smelled of blooming desert sage.
Strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind, pulling me backward against a solid, comforting chest. Adrian rested his chin on my shoulder, his breath warm against my neck.
“You’re up early,” Adrian murmured, his voice rich and deep.
“I had a lot on my mind,” I smiled, leaning back against him, letting his warmth anchor me. “Including the grand opening of the South Phoenix Community Medical Clinic this afternoon. Which, by the way, is fully funded by the Vale Foundation.”
Adrian chuckled softly, pressing a gentle kiss to my cheek. “Every good empire needs a proper foundation, Dr. Hart. And every king needs a queen who knows how to keep him alive.”
I turned in his embrace, looking up into his pale gray eyes. The dangerous, haunted shadow that had lingered in them the night I pulled him off that hospital table was gone, replaced by a quiet, fierce devotion.
“You know,” I teased, resting my hands against his chest right over his steady, beating heart, “technically, you’re still my patient. I should check your stitches.”
Adrian’s lips curved into a slow, knowing smile as his hands slid down to clasp mine.

“My heart is in perfect condition, Harper,” he whispered, leaning down to capture my lips in a deep, lingering kiss that chased away every ghost of our past. “And it belongs entirely to you.”
Down in the valley below, the city of Phoenix stretched out under the brilliant morning sun—vast, complex, and untamed. But standing here, wrapped in the arms of the man I had dragged back from the dead, I knew we had finally found our peace.
