Chapter 4 - The Lion's DenThe drive to Queens was a blur of flashing red lights, rain-slicked streets, and deafening speed.

I sat in the back of the armored Maybach, sandwiched between Adrian and a crate of tactical equipment. My hands were shaking uncontrollably. My father—the foolish, well-meaning man whose debts had sold me into this marriage—was now in the hands of brutal cartel killers because of my last name.
"Clara, look at me," Adrian commanded, grabbing both of my hands in his. His grip was tight, steadying my trembling frame. "Look at me."
I turned my tear-stained face to him. "If anything happens to him, Adrian—"
"Nothing is going to happen to him," Adrian swore fiercely, his voice filled with an absolute authority that demanded belief. "I gave my word to protect your family when I signed our marriage contract, and I have never broken a promise in my life. I will bring him back."
"Why did you really marry me, Adrian?" I sobbed, the question finally tearing out of my chest after three long years. "It wasn't just about my father's debt, was it? A billionaire doesn't buy a wife just to lock her in a penthouse!"
Adrian looked at me, his dark eyes swirling with a mixture of pain and fierce devotion. He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could answer, the Maybach slammed on its brakes, tires screeching against the asphalt.
"We're here, boss," Marco called out from the front seat, racking the slide of his handgun. "Abandoned warehouse on 14th Street. Thermal imaging shows six armed men inside, plus Petrov and the target."
Adrian released my hands, reaching under his suit jacket and pulling a sleek black handgun from a shoulder holster. He checked the magazine with effortless, terrifying precision.
"You stay in the car with two guards," Adrian ordered me, his tone shifting into ice.
"Adrian, please be careful," I whispered, reaching out and gripping his lapel.
Adrian paused. He looked down at my hand clutching his jacket, then looked up into my eyes. Without warning, he reached out, cupped the back of my head, and pulled me into a hard, fiery kiss.
My mind exploded into sparks. It wasn't like the cold, distant kiss on our wedding day. This kiss was deep, possessive, and raw—a man claiming his woman before stepping into hell. He tasted like espresso and rain, his lips demanding everything I had been holding back for three years.
When he finally pulled back, we were both breathless.

"Wait for me," Adrian whispered against my lips.
Then, he stepped out into the pouring rain, shutting the heavy armored door behind him.
