Chapter 1 - The Smoke and the SerpentThe air inside the grand ballroom of the Russo estate tasted like expensive bourbon, old money, and sulfur. Crystal chandeliers blazed overhead, casting prismatic shards across the marble floors where Chicago’s elite danced, laughed, and tiptoed around the living legends of the underworld.

I stood beside Enzo near a towering pillar of white marble, the crimson silk of my dress pooling around my heels like spilled wine. For three years, I had played this part—the pristine, untouchable trophy wife of Chicago’s most feared kingpin. People looked at us and saw power; they saw an impenetrable fortress. They didn't see the silent chasm that separated us, or the way Enzo’s hand hovered near my elbow only when cameras flashed, withdrawing the second privacy was restored.
"Remember," Enzo had muttered in the car ride over, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that barely carried above the hum of the engine. "Stay within arm's reach."
Now, watching him scan the crowd with the cold, predatory focus of a wolf surveying its territory, I wondered if his warning had anything to do with pride or everything to do with possession. Even if he hadn't touched me in the dark of our bedroom, Enzo DeLuca treated everything bearing his name as sacred territory.
And then the room shifted.
It wasn't a sudden noise or a shouted command. It was a subtle, atmospheric pressure drop, the kind that happens when a apex predator enters a room already crowded with beasts.
The string quartet playing Vivaldi faltered for a fraction of a second. Conversations died down as heads turned toward the arched double doors at the far end of the ballroom.
A man walked through.
He was younger than Enzo, perhaps by five or six years, but he carried himself with an effortless, almost insolent arrogance. He wore a midnight-blue velvet tuxedo, his dark hair falling in careless waves over a forehead unlined by the burdens of power. His eyes were a startling, piercing amber, and a faint, jagged scar cut through his lower lip, giving him the look of a wolf that had tasted blood and wanted more.
Dante Russo.
The prodigal son of Salvatore Russo had spent the last five years in Europe, expanding his father's syndicates across the Mediterranean and laundering millions through Mediterranean ports. Rumor had it he was ruthless, unpredictable, and entirely devoid of the rigid code of honor that older mobsters like Enzo still pretended to respect.
As Dante walked into the ballroom, his gaze didn't linger on the politicians, the judges, or even his own father standing on the dais.
His eyes locked onto me.
He slowed his pace, cutting a straight line through the crowd as if parting water. People scrambled out of his way, sensing the kinetic energy crackling around him. My breath caught in my throat. I wanted to step behind Enzo, to blend into the marble pillar, but my feet were glued to the floor.
Dante stopped just two paces away from us.
He didn't look at Enzo. Not at first. His amber eyes swept slowly down the length of my crimson silk gown, tracing the curve of my waist, lingering on the diamonds resting against my collarbone, and finally rising back to meet my eyes with a predatory, devious heat that made my skin flush hot and cold all at once.
"Arya," Dante said, his voice smooth as silk dragged over broken glass. He spoke my name as if we were old, intimate lovers meeting in secret. "The rumors didn't do you justice. Chicago’s iron king has kept you hidden away too well."
Enzo moved.
It was a fraction of an inch, but it was enough. He shifted his broad shoulders, stepping half an inch in front of me, placing his body squarely between Dante and myself. The air between the two men became thick enough to choke on.
"Dante," Enzo said, his voice dropping into that dark, lethal register that made hardened capos wet themselves. "Welcome back to the city. I see Europe didn't teach you manners."
Dante finally looked up, meeting Enzo’s obsidian gaze with a slow, mocking smile. The scar on his lip twitched.
"Manners are for men who own things, Enzo," Dante replied softly, his voice carrying clearly across the suddenly silent circle of onlookers. Then, his amber eyes flicked back over Enzo’s shoulder, locking directly onto mine with a terrifying, absolute hunger.

He smiled—a wide, wicked slash of white teeth.
"And as for your wife..." Dante tilted his head, his voice dropping to a conversational murmur that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "...I think I want what's yours, Enzo. Let's see how long you can keep her."
