Chapter 5 - The Healing Process

The months that followed were a whirlwind of legal battles, public press releases, and the delicate, breathtaking work of rebuilding a shattered family.
The media frenzy when Vale Industries announced the return of Sebastian Vale’s wife and three children shook Wall Street to its core. Tabloids screamed headlines about the secret marriage, the grandfather’s betrayal, and the triumphant return of the true heirs to the Vale dynasty. But inside the sprawling, sunlit penthouse overlooking Central Park—the very park where our paths had crossed in the freezing sleet—we lived in a quiet, protective bubble of our own.
Rebuilding trust wasn't easy. Every time Sebastian looked at me with too much guilt in his eyes, I had to remind him that the past was dead and buried.
“Mommy, look what Daddy made for breakfast!” four-year-old Noah shouted, running into the kitchen with a plate of slightly burnt silver-dollar pancakes shaped vaguely like animals.
I smiled, wiping flour off my hands as Sebastian walked in behind him, wearing an apron over his custom suit shirt, laughing as flour dusted his dark hair.
“They’re masterpieces, buddy,” Sebastian chuckled, kissing the top of Noah’s head before his dark gray eyes—the exact same eyes as our three children—met mine across the room.
The warmth in his gaze washed away every lingering shadow of the past four years.
Later that evening, after the children were tucked safely into their beds, fast asleep and clutching their favorite toys, Sebastian and I stood out on the private wrap-around terrace. The night air was cool and crisp, carrying the glittering lights of Manhattan spread out beneath us like a blanket of diamonds.
Sebastian stepped up behind me, wrapping his strong, steady arms around my waist, pulling me back against his chest. He rested his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair.
“What are you thinking about?” he whispered softly against my ear.
I leaned back into his embrace, placing my hands over his.
“I was thinking about how close we came to missing all of this,” I murmured, a peaceful sigh escaping my lips. “If I hadn't gone to the park that afternoon... if you hadn't looked at Owen’s eyes...”
“We would have found each other eventually,” Sebastian murmured fiercely, turning me around in his arms so I was facing him. He cupped my face with both hands, his eyes burning with unconditional love. “The universe wouldn't let me live another day without knowing my family. I spent four years living in the dark, Maya. You and the kids are the light.”
I smiled, reaching up to wrap my arms around his neck.
“Well, Mr. Vale,” I teased softly, a playful glint in my eyes. “Your light is pretty loud, and they tend to wake up at six in the morning demanding pancakes.”
Sebastian laughed—a deep, joyful, unrestrained sound that I had never heard from him before we lost everything and found each other again.

“Then I’ll learn how to make better pancakes,” he whispered, leaning down to press his lips gently, reverently against mine.
