Chapter 4 - The Patriarch’s Last Stand

Ten minutes later, the private elevator chime echoed through the penthouse suite.
The heavy double doors swung open.
Arthur Vale stepped out into the foyer, leaning heavily on a solid ebony cane with a silver wolf-head handle. He was eighty-two years old, dressed in a heavy charcoal overcoat, his silver hair slicked back, his pale blue eyes radiating the cold, aristocratic arrogance of a man who believed he owned the very air people breathed in New York City.
Two burly private security guards flanked him, but they stopped instantly when Gideon Brooks stepped out from the shadows, blocking the hallway with a leveled semi-automatic firearm tucked casually against his thigh.
“Stand down, Gideon,” Arthur commanded, his voice dry, rattling, and dripping with haughty disdain as he looked around the luxurious suite before his gaze finally landed on Sebastian and me sitting on the sofa.
Sebastian stood up slowly. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell. He simply walked toward his grandfather with the quiet, terrifying grace of an apex predator closing in on wounded prey.
“You shouldn't have come here, Grandfather,” Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper.
Arthur scoffed, leaning on his cane. “Is this about the brat and the woman? Honestly, Sebastian, I expected better of you. Falling to pieces over a commoner and a trio of illegitimate bastards? I protected the bloodline. I protected the dynasty from your foolish sentimentality.”
Clap. Clap. Clap.
The sound of slow, measured applause echoed through the room.
I stood up from the sofa, smoothing down my skirt, walking over to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Sebastian. I looked the old tyrant dead in the eye—the same man who had tried to crush me four years ago.
“Illegitimate?” I said, my voice ringing clear and steady through the penthouse. “Arthur, Sebastian and I were legally married in a civil ceremony in Westchester County on June twelfth. The marriage license was filed under seal. Our children were born four years later. Which means Noah, Ivy, and Owen are the legitimate heirs to the entire Vale estate.”
Arthur’s pale blue eyes widened slightly for a fraction of a second, the first sign of genuine panic flickering behind his icy facade. He looked at Sebastian, searching for a denial.
Sebastian’s face was carved from granite. “She’s right, Grandfather. The marriage records were legally authenticated by our corporate legal counsel two hours ago. Every asset, every trust, and every voting share you hold is currently subject to emergency forfeiture under family law fraud statutes.”
“You... you dare?” Arthur wheezed, his face turning a mottled shade of purple as he raised his cane, pointing it aggressively at Sebastian. “I built this empire! I made you who you are! Without the Vale name, you are nothing!”
“The Vale name isn't yours anymore,” Sebastian said coldly, stepping right up to the old man until they were nose-to-nose. “It’s theirs.”
He pointed a finger toward the master bedroom door, where our three sleeping children rested.
“And as of midnight tonight,” Sebastian continued, his voice echoing like the pronouncement of a death sentence, “you are permanently exiled from every corporate board, every trust fund, and every property bearing the Vale name. If you ever attempt to come near my wife or my children again, I won't just ruin you financially—I will strip away every last vestige of the legacy you spent your whole life worshipping.”
Arthur stared at his grandson, the terrifying realization washing over him that his reign of absolute terror was over. The empire he had ruled with an iron fist had just been reclaimed by the very bloodline he tried to destroy.

Trembling with impotent rage, the old man turned around, shoved past his security guards, and stumbled back into the elevator without uttering another single word.
